I've lost track of my count of AG brews already, must be somewhere around 10 I think...

Anyway, as a change from my regular hop testing APAs I though an american amber would be nice, so a Willamette based amber was Sundays brew.

4.00 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter
0.60 kg Crystal Malt
0.30 kg Vienna Malt
0.10 kg Chocolate Malt
20.00 g Willamette [6.10 %] - Boil 60.0 min
40.00 g Willamette [6.10 %] - Boil 20.0 min
20.00 g Willamette [6.10 %] - Boil 2.0 min
20.00 g Willamette [6.10 %] - Dry Hop

In my conventional way of getting something wrong I used normal crystal rather than light crystal so ended up with something that could either be an american amber or an american brown. The only other issue is I worked this recipe up while playing with beersmith and messed up the boil loss. I was targeting 21l at 1053 but ended up with 24l at 1044 from the correct preboil gravity. I've worked out what I did wrong and don't really mind, more, slightly weaker beer is fine by me.

Anyway, the compulsory grain shot

And a quick photo of my new hop stopper that worked an awful lot better than my old braid based one.

Is it just me or are more people making American ales recently? I'll be doing one next weekend too.

I've been sort of alternating, US style then European style. I'm basically one of those brewers that makes beer that you can't buy as opposed to the brewers who make beers like those you buy.

Looks pretty good rich, Have not used Willamette myself, but from what I can gather it works best in conjunction with other american hops, I hear it is a great flavor enhancing hop used with other varieties, although saying that I think its also good in its own right, I wouldn't mind a sample when Its done ;)

Sounds good rich, I bottled a pale ale kind of a thing last night. It was made with FWH willamette for bittering and late additions of First Gold, very fruity. The only other thing I've done with them is a Tribute alike, so it would be interesting to know what they are like on their own.

I've been brewing American style ales all summer, I've become totally addicted to Amarillo hops. This weekend will be the first English ale style I'll have brewed since about April...
