After deferring plans to brew a premium Pilsner till cooler weather is upon us, i've decided to brew a Worthington White Shield. 20 litres, from GW's book.

Overnight mash with be done tonight ready for boiling in the morning, then I've got to go and get some new shoes.... :D

This will be my first brew with a temp controlled brew fridge available and I will be mashing at 66C.

A forum member ( Dennis King ) has recommended this ale as one of the finest in the GW book in his opinion so I can blame him if its not liked...... :D :D

Only joking Dennis, thanks for the recomendation.

You sure do brew a lot , no wonder you piddle Mr Dribble  hope it goes as well as your other brews , i bet you have quite a stock of beer (or a beer belly )

surprisingly I've neither.....

well a little one......

For God Sake Man you are brewing far too much ale for one person in any given Lunar cycle

Curb your urges and grow some parsnips or something.

The off sales going well then Brian? ;)

Ooh is it like the white shield of old?

Shame that the mighty worthingtons brew has become a shadow of its former self, in that horrible cream flow 3.6% version!

A good humorous but interesting book about IPA's is "hops and glory" by Pete Brown.

Oh and I christened the Braumiester last weekend with a Bavarian Hefeweisen currently fermenting with Pittsy's favourite yeast WLP 380, fermenting fridge smells of banana!

Happy brewing :thumb:

yes read and enjoyed that after a recomendation by GA.

I'm hoping it is like the beer of old Simon, however after I've tinkered with my brews they are never quite as expected.

and why havent we seen a brew day post for the Braumeister ??

Yeast I'm using for this brew is WLP002 if and when it starts ! ....... its looking a little reluctant at the moment

and don't blame me for brewing often....just because you lot are rather idle and Sloth like...... :sulk:

Its a good job I was up in time to check if my new supa dooper automatic digital timer had come on at the appropriate time.......It hadn't !

I'll try reading the manual next time....

HLT manually switched on with off/on switch !

Don't ask !....

the brew morning from Hell....... :(

well not quite, but not a good day. Had to keep breaking off to play taxi for everyone today, dropped a stainless steel spoon in the boil ( they get hot ! ha )
and nothing ran smooth. However the main set back was with the hops, Opened the bag in the freezer and found a note from me....Order more Challenger ...doh !

so its not Worthington White Shield anymore.... its beer.....

Glad to get the chiller on ......

I went with Progress as there was just enough in the open packet and I was fed up by then...lol

ended up with a totally different beer to what I aimed for my final figures werel....22 litres at 1048 instead of 20 litres at 1050...oh well....you get days like this....

Surprisingly its the clearest wort I've ever had before adding the yeast. The wort would pass Vossey's feck test.....

Whitbreads White Shield it might not be, but hopefully it will be a drinkable beer.

One beer to attempt again..

Oh and I dropped and broke me glass thermometer.....

well taste test today of the similar " White Shield "

just over 2 months old. The beer poured clean and clear very little head that didn't last. but the beer is well carbonated with plenty of little bubbles rising.
No pronounced aroma, but theres plenty of taste. crisp and bitter, and clean tasting on the tongue, smooth with no harshness anywhere.
Its surely a bitter, I havent a clue if its anything like Mr Wheeler envisaged after my problems on brew day but its not a bad beer by any means.

I could see me drinking a couple of these with a ham sandwich at lunch times without any problem.
