Wow High Littleton. My best friends lived there around that time. I worked at Paulton.
He had a house between Keynsham & Saltford.
Turned into a hotel. Stayed there on my wedding night.šŸ˜

Ha, ha was going to say I've had a few pints in The Star.
I worked for Bristol Commercial Vehicles in Brislington.

Random Badger is going log on.
Think I wonder if anyone has replied.
Then he or she will think WTF has happened to my thread.

I asked the forum whether to brew an old beer kit and a clear direction quickly emerged:
  • Yes, brew it.
  • No, don't brew it.
  • Make it into a stout.
  • Never brew a Coopers kit.
  • Most Australian beer is poor.
  • Bath is nice.

Into my possession has come a rare vintage example of a Coopers Australian lager kit, only a mere 9 years past the sell by date. :D

Does malt extract actually go off in the can? It looks in good condition - is it worth the effort to take a chance on brewing it, or would I be courting certain death? Or worse, producing a poor beer?

Iā€™d say itā€™s worth a punt. I made a stout with a two tins of out of date Coopers, one Pilsner and one Dark Ale. They were both two years past their use by date. I ditched the yeast that came with them and used my own and some of my own hops. The finished beer was by far the best stout that Iā€™ve made.

I would shelve it for the apocalypse. Next to the tins of carnation milk and peaches. However, I think that Coopers tastes like dish water anyway. Tooheyā€™s old was ok. Sort of reminded me of Theakstonsā€™ old Peculiar. Though that is probably doing a major disservice to Old Peculiar.
As for Vicky Bitter. No thanks..
If these beers mean nothing to you. Then take this one thing away from my midnight ramblings. The commercial beer in Australia is garbage. In my Opinion....
Sorry if this causes offence to any Australian members of the forum. I really wanted to find something tasty. Maybe some recommendations?? Donā€™t say Fosters..šŸ¤£
Guessing youā€™ve never tried a ditches stout then mate šŸ™ˆ

So thatā€™s an imperial stout then šŸ‘šŸ»

No, it was a 28 litre batch. I mashed in 2kg of Maris Otter, 250g of melanoidin and a few other bits and bobs like Cara Munich III, Special W, chocolate rye and then added the extract tins. It finished up 6.2%.

You'll get used to it when you've posted a few more threads. :laugh8:

Oh and a shower is better!

Sounds good , ainā€™t brewing awesome , sometimes you just never know what youā€™ll get from some of the concoctions we put together

Pirate_Pete is absolutely right; that 9 year old kit is nothing more than a display item of curiosity at this point. If you keep it much longer, you may notice it start to swell. I had one I'd forgotten about in a box in the garage. It exploded and soaked through the box and attached everything to the floor.
What you think of Cooper's is irrelevant; the malt is no longer viable for making beer.
