Into my possession has come a rare vintage example of a Coopers Australian lager kit, only a mere 9 years past the sell by date. :D

Does malt extract actually go off in the can? It looks in good condition - is it worth the effort to take a chance on brewing it, or would I be courting certain death? Or worse, producing a poor beer?

I would shelve it for the apocalypse. Next to the tins of carnation milk and peaches. However, I think that Coopers tastes like dish water anyway. Toohey’s old was ok. Sort of reminded me of Theakstons’ old Peculiar. Though that is probably doing a major disservice to Old Peculiar.
As for Vicky Bitter. No thanks..
If these beers mean nothing to you. Then take this one thing away from my midnight ramblings. The commercial beer in Australia is garbage. In my Opinion....
Sorry if this causes offence to any Australian members of the forum. I really wanted to find something tasty. Maybe some recommendations?? Don’t say Fosters..🤣

Most of the mainstream beers here are rubbish.
No different to the crap Lagers etc I remember from years ago in the British pubs.
But there are quite a few small breweries not far from me who do a good beer.

I have to disagree on Coopers though. It's not that bad.
Tooheys old was one of my go to beers before I restarted homebrew.

You'd have to put a couple of cockroaches next to the cans as an experiment as to what would survive the apocalypse better.

I see you're in Bath. I used to live in Keynsham.

That is true. There are plenty of very bad mainstream beers in the U.K. I lived in Sydney and Melbourne and traveled a fair few places around and about. Yep up the Gold Coast.... yes I know, classic pommy tour of Australia. 🤣
I Would have loved to have found those good examples of “craft” and independent beers that I keep hearing about in Australia. Maybe on my return visit one day. Australia itself was beautiful. Yes I live in Bath. How long ago did you live in Keynsham? Are you from the U.K. and fled because of Brexit? Or were you just traveling the U.K.?
I think the Tooheys would out live a roach. 🤣

I've been here 30 years now.
I have to admit the crap beer (mostly) and awful pubs are two of the things that piss me off.
For a long time when I lived in Sydney a couple of mates opened one of the first micro breweries so good beer was easy to get.
Now I live north of Sydney. There are two local breweries within 3 or 4 miles.
And an excellent one near the football ground.
And a not quite so good one that supplies quite a few pubs and clubs around the area.

Don't waste your time and fermentables, and new yeast.

Put it on the shelf as a decoration.

I once made the mistake of making a pilsner that was a year or so out of date.
it came out very dark and was not good at all.
Although it will brew OK with new yeast the older it is the darker it will be.
I agree with Pete. Leave it a couple more years and it'll turn into stout.

In fact why not infuse a bit of chocolate malt and roast barley and make a stout out of it anyway? (serious suggestion, by the way. I know it's hard to tell sometimes)

Do you remember Horace Bachelor on Radio Luxembourg. I lived in High Littleton from 1978-83.
Wow High Littleton. My best friends lived there around that time. I worked at Paulton.
He had a house between Keynsham & Saltford.
Turned into a hotel. Stayed there on my wedding night.😁

Ha, ha was going to say I've had a few pints in The Star.

Yeah we have fully Hijacked his thread. It’s become the Bath and North- east Somerset meet and greet. 😆 I think we answered his question though. Shall I make this beer? We all said Yes/No, turn it into a stout.
