My next kit will be a Better Brew IPA so into the FV I shall add 2.1kg liquid malt extract from the kit, 500g light spray malt, 500g brewing sugar, boiling and cold water. What's the best order to add them? I understand that the spray malt can be difficult to dissolve or get lumpy.

I would have thought that you should put in the liquid malt extract first, and dissolve the brewing sugar in water and bring it to the boil, (but do it carefully - obviously) and add, I seem to remember being advised to dissolve spraymalt in cold water (as it clumps in hot water) :wha: , then bring to the boil - to ensure it's sterile.

+1 for cold water. i've never boiled my DME though and it's always turn out ok. I seem to remember Palmer (or another american... might have been papazian...) recommending boiling though.

again, some people do, some don't. I usually boil my priming sugar for 10 to 15 mins in a small amount of water.

i usually put my dme in first with the hot water as i find its the steam that clumps it not the hot water

+1 for that.

Again, it depends on your view, but I'd rather boil the sugar for 10mins and know that it is sterile.

Lowering the risk of infection from anything, increases the chance of success.

But each to their own, which is what it's all about :thumb:
