I'm 8 days into my first ever home brew and guess I'll need to add the hops in a few days and then prime a few days later.

Is it possible to add the priming sugar to my fv with the brew in it? Or do I need to pour it all into a newly sterilised bucket and then add the sugar, stir and then siphon into bottles?

I'm avoiding the keg I got with the kit for my first brew as it will be easier to store bottles and keep them at a cooler temperature for drinking in a few weeks time.

It's a you gas American IPA micro brewery kit that I'm using cheers

I wouldn't put sugar directly into your primary FV. Put enough sugar into a secondary FV and rack into that. Then you can syphon fill the bottles. Try syphon in a way you get very little oxygen (or splashing) as this will help stop your beer oxydising and giving off a bad taste.

Thanks matey.

I'll either get another fv bucket to siphon into or siphon to my sterilised keg and then siphon into bottles.

Is it better to use those auto siphons or the old suck a pipe with tap on the end ones?

I guess at this bottling stage it's better to get a no rinse sterilising solution? Can you recommend any if so?

Used a suck syphon for as long as I can remember without issues,as for no rinse steraliser most folk I think use starsan ,never tried it myself I mainly use Milton baby bottle no rinse steralising tablets, available from the local supermarket for around a quid

Auto siphon is handy, and you will probably get the spoiling your beer lecture from someone now you mention sucking! I, still do it now and then, you can always put a short length of tube on the tap suck on that, remove and carry on.

As for no rinse, Milton tabs 24 for a quid in pound shops or Starsan

Just ordered a few bits from the Balliihoo brew shop on ebay as you get the 5th item free so got my hands on a 23ltr auto siphon. i threw a new bucket in on the deal so I can siphon into that :)

I think there may be 2 routes you can take, both of which work effectively. That described above works fine or as I do, put a tap on you're FV and use this to go straight into primed bottles using a small funnel. Use the method you feel most comfortable with.

My choice would be to transfer the beer to your barrel after primary fermentation. Leave it there for a week, then gently stir in the priming sugar (as mentioned, avoid incorporating air into the beer at this stage). If you keg it first, you'll end up with less sediment in the bottles, and for my money a better quality beer.
If you siphon into bottles, use one of these devices (you can get them from your local shop or any mail supplier):

I'd leave the primed beer overnight before bottling so the sugar is well dispersed. don't leave it too long, though, as fizzy beer is a right pain to bottle!
Good luck
Bill
