That is a huge pack of yeast not sure it would keep though unless you were doing large batches

If you want to have a good yeast stock around it might be worth looking into getting a strain and growing it, whether this is a vial or a yeast slant.. but you could grow split and have a batch for a good few generations.. probably will be a lot better too...

i would love to be able to grow yeast, is it relativly easy or something that is just trial and error

I haven't used a slant/ slope so cannot offer any advise but what I would suggest for something simpler is you can get a decent yeast.. go for a liquid English yeast and you can step up and make huge starters and split it.. you can harvest it and get many many uses out of it..

Or you could harvest from a bottle conditioned ale, I have done the shepherds neame and am doing the Wye valley (Butty Bach) now.

It does work, it requires a bit of effort and onvolvement but the results are going to be cheaper than bulk buying s04 and ultimatley the beer is going to be better.
 
We use those 500g packs in our 1BBL brewery using S-04, US-05 and Nottingham splitting them over 4 batches. They are much cheaper from Charles Faram. We always talked about harvesting it for reuse but never got round to trying it.

1BBL ? how big a batch were you doing ?

im just about to do a hammer of thor kit and was wondering if after i get me brew out of the primary fermenter if i could just put the wort from another kit over the top and mix it up ?
 
You can also re-pitch any yeast up to about 6 times. Basically rack the beer off the yeast cake, pour some of the yeast cake into a sanitised jar then put it in the fridge till the next time you come to brew. You can keep it like this and just chuck it into your next brew for up to two weeks before you need to make a starter for it.

Just so I'm not teaching you bad habits straight away, best practice is always to make a starter for harvested yeast. This is for a number of reasons including proving that its still vital (alive) and viable. I never bother to make a starter for yeast harvested in this way but I'm being lazy

that with some yeast nutrient and brewing sugar ofcourse, and mixing the cake and wort up before making up the water content

Technically it will work and many people do this but personally I would take out some of the yeast cake and give the FV a clean before making the Thor kit then adding the bit off yeast cake back. If the brew you made prior to the thor is darker then the thor brew it could affect the colour

nononooo hehe me primary fermenter has sanitiser in it at the moment , just waiting for the ideal time to get this kit on the go.

on this topic, if as a yeast deveolps it can get better if i got 2 kits of something and after syphoning off the brew mixed up another of the same time of kit to a solution then mixed in to the old cake surely the new batch of the the same style of kit would come out better ?
