A little walk along Bermondsey Mile

Just heading to Bermondsey and wanted to try and log all the sights and tastes of the day. The gramma will get worse as the samples increase but looking forward to an interesting day with the main aim of trying as many styles as possible.

I jokingly suggested to my friend joining me that if we only drink thirds we could try all styles listed in the BJCP. It would work out at only 33 pints, more than achievable in a 12 hour period . I think it works out at a 1/3 every 7 minutes .

It's been a good few years since I've done the full mile, but make sure you have a note of when everything opens and closes - they're a bit random and some aren't open for long, particularly outside weekends so it needs a bit of planning. And also Covid may have screwed things up a bit.

Think you'll struggle a bit for some of the Continental stuff tbh - and it's a lot easier if you allow yourself to share beers. A drink every 7 minutes is pushing it though even if you buy several at a time - it can take that long to get served in some places, and there's quite a bit of walking involved too.

Reminiscent of my 40th birthday monopoly board pub crawl. We worked out that if we alternated 1 pint, half, short then things would still be sensible by pub 24. Wheels came off when we lost our discipline by drinking 3vpints on Pentonville road. Fair to say the 5 star hotel on Park Lane was reluctant to let us in.

After dropping our kit off in the hotel we stopped at BrewDog. Not everyone’s taste but I can’t resist the Jet Black Heart.
Love the nitro and looking at getting a set up in the house. If I do, this will be the first clone I do.
The next was a lost pint. We walked in the wrong direction and needed to find our bearings and rehydrate. This was Youngs Bitter. Average, but needed.

How far off piste did you wander - at a push I would say that could even be the Bunch of Grapes bby london Bridge.

So I had wanted to do these as we went but I felt rude sitting in front of my friend on my phone. Luck has it that I used an app yesterday that ‘Tracked’ my locations. I’m going to try and recap the where’s and what’s of the afternoon.

First stop was Moor Beer Valts, which is one for the heavy rocker.
We started with Claudia, their Wheat beer. Pretty standard wheat with a good amount of yeast taste.
Next was the Smoked Lager. This was an experience, one that I won’t rush back to but not so unpleasant I wouldn’t try again. This is definitely an acquired taste and one you’d need to build. Very smoky, which for me was weird as I’ve always eaten smoked items. Not in a bad way, the after taste is almost comparable to the morning after having a night with a cigar in hand.

Second stop was Bianca Road Brewing Company.
Here we went with their Rwd Rye IPA and Hay-Z NEIPA.

Hay-Z was by far the best beer of the day. Absolutely fantastic citra aroma.

The penultimate stop was at Anspach and Hobday. The nitro porter was the beer that caught our eye, but the dry hopped sour was also intriguing.

The porter was excellent and made even better by serving on nitro. I've become a massive fan of nitro recently. The dry hopped sour was interesting. It has the aroma of an IPA but crispness of a sour. It was a lovely drink.in the sunshine!!

Our final stop on Bermomdsey mile was at the Barrel Project. Where we went a little wild with Produce and Providence: Blackberry wild ferment. I forgot to take photos in here and the night became a little foggy from this point

I do remember we had a few 1/3‘s and several tasters before moving off to the city centre to enjoy the more commercial beers, which I won't bore you with.

The Cloudwater and BBNo bars are excellent. Kernel is also tremendous. Very jealous.

We never made it to BBNo and Cloudwater was full when we got there. We also couldn't find the Kernal, but gives us a reason to return.

Anyone making the journey I would suggest planning your day out, down to the hour. It'll make it very regimented but booking places mean you can guarantee getting into them while COVID restrictions are ongoing.
