I've been thinking about some sort of cheep stainless cylinder, I may have spotted one! (or not) and there is probably one in your house.

My I introduce the stainless kitchen bin, they come in a vast range of useful sizes and would be easy to modify.

Anybody modified one?

I'm sure you could take out the plastic liner. But once you've converted it you will still think if it a a kitchen bin. Do you not want to invest in a proper shiny?

Check the construction. I looked at a stainless laundry bin in IKEA but it had folded seams down the side and around the base, which may have been water tight but could certainly be a haven for nasties.

Proper shiny = proper £

Some bins are welded, but I was contemplating it as the centre of a mash tun as long as it doesn't leak it should be OK.

A PP straight sided bin would be just as good, I've not been able to find one, do you have any links?

Too many ideas too little time.

I was in a hardware shop the other day and had the same thoughts...I was looking at one of those large aluminium bins used for storing garden waste in, but I believe aluminium is prone to corrosion from the acidic wort? I'm sure however I will be corrected on that one by someone more knowledgeable though

in a similar way i keep walking passed my wheeled recycling bins and thinking "are they food grade and will they take boiling wort?". I could easily get another couple of recycling bins and fit some elements

Wheelie bins are impregnated with an insectacide oil.. so please dont use one for brewing!! schafer linpac and PO bins are all impregnated with an insectaside oil. I dont know about the cheaper tanks n drums ones.. but i still wldnt use one..

also with waste bins if welded/braised , u have no idea of the weld braize material lead??

A big ol alluminuim catering pot should be fine to use, i think the alzheimers link to ally has been debunked?? but wont cost significantly less than SS but might be a lil cheaper to tool up to work with n drill tho.

What volume are you looking at?
