About to start my first batch of home brew this week and intend, for this one at least, to use Asdas 12p 2 litre bottles.

Can I ask, will a bottling stick reach to the bottom of these 2l bottles?

And will I need to sterilise them first time around, ie: when I've cracked them opened and poured the contents out?

Thanks

Probably not, but there's nothing stopping you using a piece of PVC tube to extend it.

I'd have thought not, however, I'd rather be safe than sorry and just use some no rinse sanitiser on them.

Good question! My bottling stick is about the same length as a 2L PET bottle, so with the shoulder of the bottle it may struggle. You can use tubes of 3/8" (9mm) on to 1/2" (13mm) (on to 5/8" (16mm) if you need it) to extend the length from your tap.

I would've thought it would be ok.

edit: jamesb got there before me but I'll post anyway

Thanks for the replies.

Out of interest once I've opened a 2 litre bottle will it need to be drunk that night or will it, say, last for a second night if I don't get through it all?

It'll be ok for a couple of nights.

I collect leftover beer from beer festivals in 2l PET bottles and keep them for over a week.

I read that and had images of you running around the bars pouring dregs from near empty glasses into a single bottle.

You've seen me?
Just a good guess.

There is a bloke round here (don't know if you've seen him) that goes round at the end of beer festivals chucking all sorts of leftover beer from the casks into one homebrew barrel. Guess it's a s**tmix.

Can't say I've noticed him, although it reminds me of someone staggering out of a Shrewsbury fest a couple of years ago swigging strong perry from a 4 pint plastic milk bottle. (That someone was me).
