Been wanting to try a basic American Style Lager using rice. One of my pals has been asking me to make one for a while now and also wanted to try temperature step mashing.
Type: All Grain
Date: 14/08/2009
Batch Size: 15.00 L
Brewer: Chris Graham
Boil Size: 20.16 L Asst Brewer: Lyra-pie
Boil Time: 90 min Equipment: My Equipment
Taste Rating(out of 50): 35.0 Brewhouse Efficiency: 75.0
Taste Notes: Made this to test the combination of malts and also to try rice for the first time. Should be interesting using an Ale yeast at low temps.

Mash Out Heat to 75.6 C over 10 min 75.6 C 10 min
Cracked rice
Boiled for 30 mins till mushy
Mash water
Protein rest for 20mins
I just couldnt get the mash temp up to 65 degrees so had to carry out a deconcoction mash instead.
Had my first stuck mash which isnt bad since this is my 19th
First runnings
Just chucked the hop pellets into the boiler (wish i had used a hop bag, see later)
Testing gravity and temp and having a home brew (Last Frost Ale)
Spent grains, look at the amount of rice, no wonder it stuck
Boiled for 90mins
Hop pellets
I think a lot of **** got into the FV
The hop filter worked too well, it clogged up all the gunk that i couldnt run any more off.
Two packs of Nottingham as I will be fermenting at a lower temp
Diluted it down to 15L of 1.044
Despite a lot of problems it was a fun night.
