1 can + 1kg DME + 500g sugar too much?

Hi, this is my first ever brew, so please be gentle :-D

I've got my basic equipment, ingredients and a hell of a lot of empty bottles. Just a question or two before I get started.

I'm thinking of using a can of Australian Cooper Stout (Original Series), 1kg Dark DME and also 500g of Jaggery unrefined sugar. The reason behind this sugar is because recently I've had a real love for Lion Stout from sunny Sri-Lanka and although I'm only starting out on this brewing adventure I hope to ultimately brew a clone of the Lion Stout which contains Jaggery. So I'm hoping the sugar will impart a hint of flavour.

Am I going at this a little bit gung ho?
Should I maybe only use 500g DME and the 500g sugar?

I know this is a little bit subjective but any advise or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

:-) its right tho, when ppl first start the best thing to do is it the right way.
do a test brew, step by step. then make changes, but you need a starting point before editing a brew or you dont know where you went wrong if you do.
 
I usually have at least 1500 grams of fermentable sugars in my brew so it isn't to much just bumps up the ABV a bit
 
...funnily enough that was the first thing I did. Was just concerned about ending up with 20l of bland stout.
