First Time making a Cider

Evening all I am in the process of trying to make my first home made cider using supermarket juice. I have tried reading through the forum for hints and tips but just made things worse for myself !! :doh:

Do you use pure juice, concentrated juice or juice drink?

I was looking at using something similar to this?

To make a Gallon how much of what do I need to use?

I don't make it but i think those that do just get the cheapest 100% apple juice they can find.

Ive only ever made it from pressed fruit so im unsure mate - but i would image you need to use 100% fruit juice.

But someone on here will have the answer!

The juice you put a link up for would probably work but you'd get a fair bit of sediment with the raspberry puree I would think

Best bet to start of with is the ordinary apple juice cartons, get the 100% from concentrate stuff, not any sort of 'apple juice drink' that is usually cheaper but has added water in it

Tesco Everyday Value Apple Juice 1 Litre, 65p a litre

you probably want 4l of that and a mug of tea, some pectolase and a cider yeast sachet and you're laughing

To flavour and prime (if you want it fizzy) I use the polish syrups for this, they come in various flavours (cherry, strawberry, blackcurrant etc..) and work really well

Thanks Roddy, how much of the syrup do you use in a Demijohn? as the wife prefers her fruit ciders rather than the plain cider

I use the syrup to batch prime before bottling, I reckon it retains more of the syrup flavour

Ah I see would you use the while bottle to prime 1 gallon?

jeesus no hehe !

I use a whole bottle sometimes depending on the sugar content of the syrup, but that's on 25ltrs

eg, the raspberry syrup I'm using on my current cider has 82g of sugar per 100ml. The bottle is 440ml so sugar is 82g x 4.4 = 360g of sugar in the whole bottle

If you're doing 5l of cider, and you want a decent fizz, (I use about 6g per 500ml), that's 10 bottles, so 60g of priming sugar required, so about 75ml of that syrup

Roddy when you say a cup of tea for the dj how many tea bags would you put in the mug thanks I'm still getting my head round these ill pick it up slowly but you have been a great help

hi roddy.can I ask do you transfer from 1 dj to another to batch prime then bottle or just put the syrup into the primary dj?.sorry to ask but I've just got my 1st dj of cider on the go

I transfer to another fv then prime and bottle straight away Ã°Å¸ËÆ

priming in primary would stir up all the sediment Ã°Å¸Ëâ¢

Doesn't need boiling, beauty of this stuff is that there's no preservatives in it Ã°Å¸ËÆÃ°Å¸ËÆÃ°Å¸ËÆ

I usually use 6g per 500ml bottle so depending on the sugar content of the syrup you use, you'll use more ml than g

Eg Raspberry has 85g per 100 ml so for 6g of sugar you'll need 6 / 85% (ml)
