Day 23 and still going, down to 1.020....

takes ferkin ages compared to the 'summer' time, sitting at around 18 deg... Yeast said it was good for down to 15 deg so should be OK

Tasting pretty good at this stage too,,
always a bonus haha 😄

nice... sg down to 0.996 so racked it last night, degassed, stabilised and kwik cleared it... looking pretty clear already after 24 hrs.. will bottle at the weekend

not going to bother with sweetening any, 0.996 just takes the edge off the dryness 😃

Hiya Roddy

This sounds lush! What is the best way of degassing in your opinion? Just by giving it a good old shake?

I do mine by the 25l matey, so I use a cordless drill and wine whip

that method's proved pretty reliable so far and only takes 10 mins or so (altogether)

there is a video somewhere of a home made wine whip made from a plastic coat hanger. I tried making one of those but my hangers must have been sub standard cos I got plasticcy bits coming off them haha. Bought an 'official' similar piece of food grade plastic for a fiver on amazon

It's taken me a few goes to get the knack... seems to be to have drill on one direction for 2-3 secs, then reverse for the same. I had been doing it a little too long in one direction, which creates a bit of a whirlpool effect, which bobs the bubbles a bit too near the top of my carboy, threatening to overflow !

I don't use dj's but same principle applies to using a drill on those O guess

haha - I guess it makes a difference making 25l as opposed to 5l !
The plastic coat hanger whip sounds very Blue Peter-ish - I shall have to search for that! At the mo I'm giving my wine periodic shakes, but I'll have to invest in a whip :grin::grin:

Cheers, Roddy.

They have whips on Blue Peter now

I can only magine what that Peter Purves would have got up to with Valerie Singleton if they'd had whips then........

"chips, dips, chains, whips - but we're not talking candlewax on the ni......" hehe

10 points for the name of the film 😃

no probs Louise

Funny I still assume that all the members of the forum are beard sporting, socks/sandal wearing gentlemen haha, hence the 'matey' (no offence to members that meet that criteria 😉)

oh dear my freshly bottled (and into a glass) wow is taking hold... something satisfying about that ! 😵
