Should i just bin my hydrometer?

@MashBag! You can't say words like "***locks" on this forum ... The Moderators will get upset. (Okay, what d'you want ... What you mean "put yer glasses on"? ... If I could find you, I'd wrap 'em round your neck ... ) And @Agentgonzo ... I already have a petition insisting on the HMRC...

Last Orders On 11 British Beers.

Thanks for those words of comfort. If they're true! Under the circumstances (Carlsberg don't like things with "legend" attached) I'm glad I've stocked up anyway. I'm not worried about BBEs on a 7.4% beer! But I haven't seen it on draught for many decades. (In the - bad - days when your driver -...

Worth investing in a pump, or more important things?

I really don't like that "Bouncer" product: Why are we in the UK spending a fortune on these things imported from the USA, which the "Bouncer" company probably imported from China, when we can go on eBay and purchase exactly the same things (with many more options if you want them) direct from...

Last Orders On 11 British Beers.

Is that "delisted" list even complete? I forked up for a shedload of this yesterday (and it did have a 10% Black Friday reduction, but it seems that was a lie). The "once it's gone, it's gone!" is very dramatic!

Worth investing in a pump, or more important things?

I wouldn't look for one pump, your budget of £100-150 will easily stretch to two (you've not recirculating mucky mash, which maybe does require a large bore (12+mm). One for cooling water (doesn't need to be sanitary, can be "impellor" type which will shift quick, £40-50 should get a good one)...

    CO2 Cylinder Pressures

Interestimg? Why are we having this conversation? @thegrantickle should have had his answer in the first couple of posts! The variation in pressure of CO2 cylinders, as indicated by the "high-pressure" gauge should be down to the temperature. But in reality, it's because the gauges are CWAP! No...

Ideal length of G30 V3 recirculation tubing

I got the v3 "upgrade" (replacement malt pipe) which included the extra-long tube length. It's that long because some folk (me included) will use it to pump out via the chiller that is sat on something nearby, not the brewing pot itself. A bit of fiddling about to rig it up initially, but less...

    Whirlpool/hopstand vs dryhop

I certainly hope so! I haven't finished my planned "dry hopping" alternative yet, but it's much as you describe. I got a "Hop Missile" (cheap-skate's Hop Rocket), but only because I'm using "No-Chill Cubes" and can't do a hop-steep. And also, because I can't do what you can! Drop the...

    What is Residual Alkalinity?

Hey! You rotten lumps. This is all falling about me ears and no-one steps in to bail me out? Well, I do what I usually have to do and did it myself (I think). Yeap, Calcium (and Magnesium) have a marked effect on pH (I'd always viewed it as a minor secondary effect). Not because Calcium or...

    Recommend me a digital refractometer

That's an expensive 100ml bottle, and the weighing scales are "fiddled" so it's showing the liquid's SG to be 1.3929. But this "trick" with them is not an economical recommendation. But it shows what can be done!

    Recommend me a digital refractometer

Pyknometer! Well, it has to be said (by me!). Far cheaper (<£10 for an adequate 25ml one) than any of them fancy Milwaukee and Anton Parr glitter balls. But you do need some decent weighing scales (about £50 will do) ... but they do come in handy for other things (like mine are weighing...

    What is Residual Alkalinity?

Aww ,cwap. I was right first time, Chris had said the salts get altered "proportionally": But I already know that won't add up. Ooo look, there was a typo in my earlier thread (said pH4.46 instead of 4.66). Doesn't mean my calculations are right though. Time I poured me-self a beer.

    What is Residual Alkalinity?

Oops! Concentration slacking 'cos mind is focuses on playful river (it's going back down again now). The amount of grain and salts stay the same, but the mash water halves, from 20L to 10L. And Bru'n Water is even less happy with this mucking about: Hmm. Okay, I have avoided the (real) river...

    What is Residual Alkalinity?

I've been working hard on Chris Colby's approach to water. Breaking it down so I can build a "calculator" out of it. Which probably breaks all Chris's reasons for doing it that way! But, I want to avoid a calculator that "predicts" the resulting pH which is flippin' hard and no-one seems to do...

    1st time kegging help

Laughing aside, you're dead right! I'm mixing up me units ... sorry! About 2PSI, and I don't read it, the regulator (Clesse LPG regulator of course) has one big knob and big numbers 0-10 (with no units). 1.1 volumes is only a rough estimate. As is 2PSI (roughly 150mbar). I actually set it less...

Should i just bin my hydrometer?

Aww. But it does look as if "hydrometer" has returned to good favor. I quite like threads that end with a thrown away hydrometer. I can't easily read the blasted things and spent ages on an alternative* but failed miserably to convince others to switch. And I'm not talking "Refractometers"...

Beer demand/check valve or in line non return valve for Handpull

For the check-valve to do its job of preventing beer having a bit of an unscheduled ferment one "early hour of the morning" and the pressure pushing several pints of beer over the floor (or if attaching any vessel with a tiny amount of pressure in it), you need to put the check-valve in the...

    Bicarbonate of soda

Perhaps? Have you read that twelve-year-old thread I posted? Wasn't actually done to hi-light the issue in question ... "Veiled criticism"? That was Martin Brungard posting ... twelve flippin' years ago. No, Gordon doesn't seem to use Magnesium salts, but many don't. They are unnecessary ...

    Bicarbonate of soda

I only mentioned steeping because it's an alternative to adding at the end and because I never knew "Gordon Strong" was an advocate of "adding at the end" and therefore that was what you meant. Unlike you I'm not a supporter of Mr Strong, as you well know! I'd strongly (!) advise against...
