    Death by cycle.

The lanes have become the exercise grounds of the masses and I sympathise with anyone who has to use them commercially. I use them a lot as they are quiet. So do a lot of bikes, horses, runners, walkers and dog walkers. It can't be easy navigating them on a timetable. Lots of blind corners too...

    Death by cycle.

I'm a cyclist and I found it funny. A lot of cyclists don't really try and help themselves. If I see another cyclist in the gloom of winter dressed in black I'll scream. I wear bright yellows and lime green. I have six lights. Even then I'm often not seen. But a lot of car drivers can be...

    Secret Santa Reviews 2024

Thanks for the positive reviews @fury_tea and @Moe. It was a kit brew. All my brews this year were from the "simply" range, as they had an offer with a free kilo of brewing sugar. This was "simply" stout. But I added an Extra 500g of demarara and a kilo on damson and a kilo of blackberries...

    Death by cycle.

I consider myself a fairly considerate cyclist, but I do stand my ground when I'm in the right and I will demand that my safety is considered. I did take exception to a Jeremy vine post on twitter though. He clearly jumped amber light when he had plenty of time to stop, and then proceeded...

    Secret Santa Reviews 2024

Best bitter. Good well rounded beer. Slight bitterness all the way through but not overpowering. Thoroughly enjoyable.

    Secret Santa Reviews 2024

Didn't have much to go on from the label. Hadn't heard of this yeast before, (bit of a brewing novice), but I googled it and it sounds interesting. Opened with a nice hiss. Poured into a nucleation glass, and it was quite lively. Bit cloudy. Not sure if that was intended or due to travel, but...

    Job market forecast for 2025?

I guess that's the difference between an umbrella company and a limited company. I've worked with both. But I found the umbrella quite limiting, but very cheap and simple. Nowadays is there much you can claim under a limited company?

    Job market forecast for 2025?

Personally, I think it's much easier to avoid tax as a permie. I've worked for umbrella companies that didn't allow salary sacrifice into pensions. Whereas with my permanent job, overpayments to pension, bike to work, company car, sharesave scheme, I hardly pay any tax.

    Electric chainsaws...

Thanks, you've given me an idea to build something I can use to chop bits that are just a bit too big for the fire.

Go on, put me down for two please.

    Electric chainsaws...

Can I please see a pick of your saw frame? I have an electric titan from Screwfix. It's been brilliant for lopping small branches off trees, even cutting down small trees up to a foot in diameter. But whenever I try and cut firewood it sends the wood flying. I need some way of holding it steady.

When you can't let that last bit go...

I get the very last drop out and put it in a special tester bottle. I open this after 2 weeks just to get a taste of what the batch will be like. The rest of this I use in my snail traps.

    Job market forecast for 2025?

Recessions can be good for contractors as companies are often unwilling to commit to permanent staff in uncertain times. Saying that it's 20 years since I contracted. I hope the markets not dead as I may wish to do a couple of short term stints after my current role expires. Wouldn't mind doing...

Should i just bin my hydrometer?

I never use a hydrometer. I gauge through the time it's been brewing and the rate of bubbling. If the brew has been brewing for about what I would consider normal for that time of year, and the air valve has slowed to an acceptable rate, or equalised it's pressure, then I bottle the next day...

Keep your ale from warming up

I've never seen a stubby holder on sale in the UK. I brought mine over from Australia. Rather than being used to keep beer cold, I tend to use mine to keep my hands warm when drinking cans or bottles in winter. Useless for homebrew though, as it won't fit my pint glasses.

    Covid

I currently have COVID. My son brought it back from Budapest. Half hour car ride was all it took. I'm not too bad. Blocked nose, bit tired, bit achy, mild cough, but I have been fairly active. Not staying in bed. I have lymphoma so I qualify for the vaccines. I've had all the vaccines except I...

Is there anyway you can sligthly sweeten a kegged stout?

Update on my variation of this brew Simply stout 1kg brewing sugar 500g Demerara 1kg damsens 1kg blackberry De stoned the damsens which wasn't too bad. Parsterised the fruit. Added everything in the brew as per normal. This is when things went a bit crazy. Had it in the kitchen, but...
