I did this March. Surprised that they recommended fermenting at 20 C (is that a lager yeast??) so went with a proper lager yeast and liquid malt extract and fermented at 16 C. Both batches were surprisingly drinkable. Bulldog one was quite dry. Mine was darker.

If these single packs are designed for 20 litres or so....that's a lot of yeast to start with say 500 ml?

In this instance Clarence I was planning to buy myself a few more weeks before I brew; my liquid yeast is a bit older so thought a week or two in the fridge after ranching buys me some time. Don't Palmer and Papazian suggest a starter when you use liquid yeast? I suggested 2 to 3 litres given...

Not sure if this is the right thread, but am struggling to find advice on starter step size increments when you start with a single packet of liquid yeast. Straight into 2 or 3 litres I would assume? Any thoughts? David C.

I'm new to the game but there are some people suggesting the state of dried yeast is not optimal for starters? Something about their reserves?

I think my prerference for ABV is 4 to 5% anyway. Brewing my own has made me start to taste beers much more carefully. I thought I was an IPA person but I am starting to get put off excessive citrus.
