There are no daft questions as I tell apprentices. You may get lots of daft answers though :laugh8:.

Using Kegland spunding valve for pressure fermentation

Firstly, the spunding valve is a cheap, but effective device. The only way I can think that crud could stop it working is if you allow crud into it. If you do it is easy (as your picture shows) to take it apart and clean it. I am an engineer who designs process plants so am very familiar with...

    Sugar dispenser

I like the lottery when I open the bottle clapaI have had some that suit very little carbonation an I found out by accident.

I'm going to print one and try it

    Sugar dispenser

I gather these are for a specific sugar. The type and CO2 volumes change don't they on which sugar and sugar volume is dependant on the density of sugar, ground/granulated etc. Saying that I just bung 1/2 tsp DME in each 500ml and hope for the best

Using Kegland spunding valve for pressure fermentation

I only ever pressure ferment with lagers that don't want any ester type component. I don't know if i'm making this up from a dream..I'm at that age! but I thought lagers were bottom yeasts and in commercial lager they are in 10m fermentation silos so they effectively see 1 bar (14psi) pressure...

Using Kegland spunding valve for pressure fermentation

In the company I work for, the safety assessor in a HAZOP would say " what if the valve broke and it just went open". We would say it wouldn't as back pressure forces it shut. He would then insist on sanitizer on the output. aheadbutt There is no harm I suppose in doing that but it just seems...

Using Kegland spunding valve for pressure fermentation

I have brewed many (50+) lagers under pressure in this way, I have never put the output from the spunding valve in sanitiser and never had a problem. The pressure is driving CO2 out so nothing can go in. I have pressurised the fermenter and then set the spunding valve to the correct pressure and...

    Twang/Banana-ish aftertaste.. Help!

It looks like a 12A so they rate it at 10A

    Twang/Banana-ish aftertaste.. Help!

Yes it has relays in it

    Twang/Banana-ish aftertaste.. Help!

It says its a 10A load compatible. It may be a big fridge but not that big.

    Twang/Banana-ish aftertaste.. Help!

Yes I agree, if the red LED is not on but the fridge is still cooling, high inductive loads can cause relays to weld as they arc when being turned off. You should be careful about the duty cycle and hysteresis when using cooling,,,(Set a good distance between the heating and cooling HD and CD...

    Twang/Banana-ish aftertaste.. Help!

I do pay particular care to aerate the wort. I used to use a fish pump and stone but was never quite convinced with the sterilisation of these (never got any off flavours though), I just use a counterchiller now with an aeration head and find it starts fermentation quickly after that. I did use...

    Twang/Banana-ish aftertaste.. Help!

From my reading I found this which was helpful How To Avoid/Control: Choose the appropriate yeast for the style. Aerate wort thoroughly before fermentation starts and avoid aerating after fermentation as begun. Pitch the right amount of healthy yeast. Maintain good temperature control. Higher...

    Twang/Banana-ish aftertaste.. Help!

Maybe it's the engineer in me but I never use temp control without a back up temp device. I have had inkbirds freeze my lager whilst saying 4 degrees and 26 degrees when saying 20. I have found them to very good at first then drift off into some other realm. I always check with duplex devices...

What are you drinking tonight 2024.

Made a pedigree which I tried to save after mashing too low a temp. Added sugar at the end to give better mouthfeel and it was OK but never felt 100% with it. Determined not to waste it so mixing it with 20% London porter and its very nice. .Good enough to drink anyway 😋

    Free Magnum whole hops

I get a nice cone in the boil kettle after whirlpool which slightly collapses at the end leaving 0.5l of wort in the kettle from 56.5l. There is nothing to clog up. Thats why i moved to HERMS setup as the Robobrew was a nightmare sometimes.
