    DME priming problems

No, I dissolve it in boiled tap water and add the solution to the transfer vessel before syphoning the beer into it. Brewers Friend did calculate quite a large measure (can't remember exactly). The bottles didn't really gush on opening, only on pouring. BTW good to see a fellow fan of the good...

    DME priming problems

I always used to use priming sugar (destrose?) for priming but a while ago I decided to try DME. I have done 5 or 6 brews using DME for priming and all of them have seemed OK until you pour the stuff into a glass, at which point a massive froth monster appears. It takes 3 glasses to pour a 500ml...

BIGGEST Balls up to date!, what’s your biggest fail?

A while ago I had a nice Bohemian Pilsener that I'd fermented in the cellar (cool) for 2 weeks and then racked off to mature in the fridge for 6 weeks. So far so good. I then bottled about 24 x 500ml bottles. Nice. I had a little left in the transfer vessel so I gave it a taste - luckily. It...

    Unpourable!

Occasionally, I get a brew that has gone perfectly well, but when I pour it, it forms a massive pile of foam and a puddle of beer at the bottom of the glass - requiring 3 glasses for a 500ml bottle. I ferment my beer until it''s more or less stopped and prime it using DME according to the...

    Fleet and Gedney buying

I would be in for 10kg of Maris Otter and might stretch to 15kg, and I usually have a few other bits to order too. *** Ah, I see Brewers Select are a wholsaler only so I won't be able to get my 100g of Fuggles! Still in for 1/2 a bag of MO though. Do they sell it crushed?

    Fleet and Gedney buying

A few weeks ago, someone from Gedney (South Lincs) contacted me (in Fleet 1 mile away) about sharing malt purchases etc. I'm still keen and will need to place an order in the next week or two. Sorry! I lost the message and have no way of contacting you. Let me know if you're still interested...

    No chill

The Well-Cooled brewery is an outlier! As the name suggests I use well water pumped through an immersion chiller and then the drain hose returns the (slightly warmer) water to the well. The only possible issue is if there are any leaks that dribble back into the cooling wort, but as far as I...

    Brewzilla Gen4 Timer?

That's interesting, I had the same problem getting the app to run on my phone. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it several times and then just left it for a few days and next time it worked.

    Brewzilla Gen4 Timer?

Yes, I do mean the mobile, and yes your right, using the website on a laptop is easier. However the mobile is handier. I used a profile for my first brew. I think I loaded it onto the BZ from the laptop and didn't get any alarms on my phone, although I'd programmed them in. I understand that a...

    Brewzilla Gen4 Timer?

I've just done my first brew with my new shiny G4. Seemed to go well. I used the 'top plate' when mashing and it all got a bit squashed and I had to dip my hands in to remove the plate so I could loosen it all up. No problem, I won't use it next time except possibly when sparging. One thing...

Sold FREE mash tun, immersion chiller, insulating jacket.

I've just upgraded to a shiny new Brewzilla G4 and so have some of my old kit to unload. There is a mashing bucket with perforated bottom, insulating jacket that fits a standard 25 litre bucket and a home made copper chiller. All a bit Heath-Robinson but worked for me for several years. Free if...

    Low alcohol brewing advice

I noticed that fermintis have a low attenuation yeast (LA-01) which is only available in 500g packs. I emailed them asking fif they were intending to issue it in smaller (11g) packs for home-brewers. Here is the reply, which I think is useful and hope you do too.

    Best for dry hopping?

@MashBag thanks, yes I've been playing with bittering hops as well. Firstly I reduced them because I nearly always use pellets. Then I noticed that the alpha acid content quoted in the recipe rarely matches the percentage listed on the pack, so I now make adjustment for that.

    Best for dry hopping?

So, I added 20g each of Chinnok and Cascade both in leaf fornm and in 'hop socks' to my 17L IPA brew. After 4 days I have removed them and I have to say the improvement to the taste of the young beer is amazing! It's my first go at dry hopping and I think I'll use it again - many of my brews...

    Best for dry hopping?

I'm brewing a Punk IPAish kind of thing with Ahtanum, Chinook, Amarillo and Motueka all there at flame-out. I'd like to dry-hop to give it an extra fruity punch. Any recommendations? Expected SG will be about 1047. I have more of each of the above plus several more aromatics available too.

This will seem a strange topic but I think it's relevant here

Thanks Ken, I think the problem is with large piles of grain that forms a crust and then percolates within the pile. It can really stink! I'm sure that if you can spread it out to dry for a day or two that would make a huge difference.

This will seem a strange topic but I think it's relevant here

We used to get heaps of spent malt at thge allotment, from our local brewery. It smelt disgusting but when spread about a bit made a good mulch which can be dug in as required. I put spent malt and hops onto my compost heap at home now but I make sure I mix it in well to try and avoid unpleasant...
