I own one of the cheaper ones, so far it has been ok, i have had no problems with it, as for hacking in a pid controller, there is a italian company that specialises in a purpose built controller for the cheaper guten type brewers, it comes with everything you need including a new cover plate...

if you have no thermometer i would look on ebay for a stick on one, atleast then you will have some idea what temp your fermenter is at.

i think its quite common in homebrew terms, it was a fridge freezer originally with a single compressor, so the problem i had was stopping the freezer from freezing the beer, i had to block most of the vents in the freezer to block and limit the amount of cold air coming into the freezer, also...
