    Damn, I broke one.

22 litres of Big Belfast Blonde ale. Meant to be in the fermenter 2 weeks, but got distracted by other things and it ended up being well over a month. Went to rack it into the keg and found it has a slight pellicle on the top and an odd solventy sweet smell. Put it in the keg, 40PSI and...

My blonde ale went into melt down and made a "elephant's foot".

Yummy stuff! It had the consistency of cat poop.

    "guerrilla" brewing - incremental changes.

I have been accused of "guerrilla brewing" and I kinda like that. I started with a bucket with kits, and added little bits as I went, adapting recipes and techniques to work with what I had on hand to use. Through kits to adding speciality grains/cyrstal, partial extract to full extract and...

    BIAB - Mash temperature

This is the recipe: Massey Red Irish Ale All Grain Ingredient Kit - 23 Litres 5.8% - Get Er Brewed Not vastly detailed, but it came with an A4 print out with more. I normally strike at 75, poke out the lumps and by that time it's usually down to high 60s, so I wrap it in a fleece or blanket...

Tea urn tap - not buffalo or cygnet

I did eventually purchase the above kit. It works. Enlarging a hole in thin stainless steal with a cheap step bit is not easy, the bit tends to catch and peel and jam. You might be better off tolerating the noise that a round file would make enlarging it. PTFE Tape is essential. Asides for...

    BIAB - Mash temperature

Yea. Maybe it is time I bought/make a mash tun and leave BIAB behind. What's one more bit of home brew equipment anyway.

    BIAB - Mash temperature

Hi. I was brewing a recipe from a local brew shop yesterday and encountered the first time I needed to raise the mash temperature. The recipe said to bring 19L of water to 50*C. Stir in the grain slowly and let it sit maintaining 50*C for 45 minutes. Then raise the mash temp to 68*C for a...

Tea urn tap - not buffalo or cygnet

Is this an option ... if I buy a step bit with a 7/8inch step and widen the hole? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Weldless-Kettle-Bazooka-Homebrew-Hardware/dp/B01I9L5P3S/

Tea urn tap - not buffalo or cygnet

Hi, I'm done with the plastic tap on my kettle and have decided to fit a ball valve tap. I'm also going to create a plastic sparging bucket with a ball valve tap, if order 2 makes sense. Looking for basic tips. The current through hole / bulkhead for the tap measures at 15.5mm so a 15mm...

Hop profile for Mosaic, Galaxy and Topaz.

So it's coming up on 2 weeks in the fermenter. I had to bring it indoors from the garage as the temp (of the beer) dropped to 13*C. Thankfully after an evening near a radiator indoors it started to bubble again. Smelling the airlock is all I have to go on and it could still be a hop disaster...

wanting to do my first AG BIAB...

I'm a BIAB'er. I use a 30 Litre canteen 3Kw boiler. If you go this option you will need a power controller or TRIAC dimmer to maintain a rolling boil and not cause it to rain in the kitchen... don't ask how I know that. I use 5 gallon paint strainer bags for grain. About 15L of strike water...

Hop profile for Mosaic, Galaxy and Topaz.

I ran it through a brew calc. Good job. 25g each of those hops would produce a massively high IBU, probably undrinkable. Seems 10g each and removing the 60min batch and adding at 30mins is needed to bring an IBU around 34. Samuel Adams has an IBU of 30!

Hop profile for Mosaic, Galaxy and Topaz.

Oh and answering my own question. The kettle clearing agent is proto-floc (an irish moss alternative). I dump it in 5 minutes before boil end along with the copper coil cooler. It drops the sediment and haze causing proteins out of suspension by the time it's cooled... or that is what it...

Hop profile for Mosaic, Galaxy and Topaz.

I'm not really "learned" in IBUs TBH. I'm new to these hops too. Previously I accidentally made a really nice beer by using 30g Target for 1 hour with 30g EKG 30min and another hop I can't remember for 5 mins. I figured it was I'd usually only used 20g of each previously. First taste made my...

    And we worry about infection

I sanitise everything used post boil or rather post cooling. I have had two infections maybe out of about 50 brews, only one resulted in it being poured down the drain as it tasted like vinegar. The actual window for infection is quite small and it depends greatly on how you are brewing. For...

Hop profile for Mosaic, Galaxy and Topaz.

Also. I used to be using a post boil fluculant to help settle the trub out of the boiler before transfering to the fermenter. I just can't find it anymore. I hope I have some left, but does anyone know what it's called or where I can find it?

Hop profile for Mosaic, Galaxy and Topaz.

Hi, I haven't brewed in a while, maybe 2 years. Now that supplies are easier to get again I put an order in. My plan is to make a basic all-grain irish red ale, but to try and apply a hop taste similar to Samuel Adams or HopHouse13 etc. My understanding is that those beers use combinations...

    CO2 Regulator help.

From the behaviour during my low pressure testing I think it's more like the first stage valve seat has failed. Backing the pressure screw right out still allows flow through it. The sticker says the RVs were set to 55PSI, which would be ideal for a first stage home brew reg as you would never...

    CO2 Regulator help.

Sound advice. I should point out that while testing I was only feathering the trigger on the FE. ie. pulling the trigger very, very slow and very very slightly so as to not apply the full pressure of the cylinder until I was comfortable... and I wasn't comfortable. Anyway, here is another...
