Wherry - first brew in years!

I think it had dropped a little bit by last night, but not much. Gave it a good stir up so hopefully that'll get it going again. Dave

Wherry - first brew in years!

I think it's as much to do with the empty space (once you've had a few pints out) being occupied with CO2 rather than the ambient air which may contain bacteria that will harm your beer as much as carbonation. My Wherry was down to 1024 on Monday and now it's at 1022.... fermentation has...

Wherry - first brew in years!

We picked up a "Dasher the Flasher" kit from Milestone Brewery. Thought we'd do a brew with an xmas theme and see if we can keep our hands off it until then! The wherry will be in my only barrel so might pick up a couple of smaller ones to put this in so we can strategically position one at my...

Wherry - first brew in years!

Will leave well alone until next weekend then... I had an excuse though so I went to homebrew shop this morning anyway. I got some yeast (just in case I need it) and another 2 can kit to do once the wherry is done and some gas for my king keg. It's actually been 4 years since I visited the...

Wherry - first brew in years!

It's down at 1030 now so still going but the frequency of the bubbling through the air lock had reduced considerably. I gave the barrel a bit of a shake about to mix things up about and it's bubbling again. It's only got a very small amount of foam on the top... not the inch or so I've seen on...

Wherry - first brew in years!

The air lock has been bubbling away all day so it's definitely picked up! Just took a sample out (through the tap, didn't crack it open) and it's now at 1035 having started at 1046 or thereabouts. Didn't want to throw the sample back in (unsantised trial jar/hydro) so shame to waste it...

Wherry - first brew in years!

There's about a quarter inch layer of foam formed on the top now so it appears to be doing something. Am I best off giving it a stir to aerate it or just leave it be? Dave

Wherry - first brew in years!

I'll check it tonight and see if it's budged at all - if not I'll get some new yeast. Is there any particular type of yeast I need to be using? I checked the temperature this morning. It's at 24.5c and it's still falling a little bit. Hopefully the extra heat cause too much problems...

Wherry - first brew in years!

I found another FV in the loft containing a load of other stuff including my digital thermometer. It's telling me the wort is at 27c at the moment and falling very slowly - about 1c per hour. Maybe I should have chilled down some of the water that went in... ah well, can't be helped!

Wherry - first brew in years!

Hi all Yesterday I get a private message from "TxBrew" on this very forum saying it's a while since I've been online. Quite right... it's also been a very long time since I brewed anything... So, the wife is out tonight so the brewing stuff came out the loft for the first time in years! There...

    Wychwood bottles

I went through a phase of drinking an embarrasing quantity of hobgoblin (well, it is very nice!) so I've got loads of these. I have a two handed capper but ended up buying a knock on with a hammer type as the two handle wouldn't work. Was less than a tenner and really not difficult to use...

    1 gallon batches

You don't have to drink it all at once. Bottle it and drink it at your leisure :) I've not tried AG brewing yet but, for the effort involved, you might as well brew as much as you can and store it. Otherwise you'll be brewing every other week! Dave

    High gravity wherry?

stupid me... although I had thoroughly stirred it after dissolving the malt extract, I hadn't stirred it again after topping up with cold water. I assumed that the cold water would just mix up as it went in. School boy error I suppose! Once stirred again, hydrometer reading is 1043 which...

    High gravity wherry?

I've tried putting the hydrometer into tap water and it's coming out at 1000, which is correct isn't it? Dave

    High gravity wherry?

Hi all I've done a couple of kits over the last couple of years with varying results; failed once due to having too much water and making a really weak wort, another time due to problems with temperature, etc. So I got all the stuff together this afternoon and I'm determined to do justice to a...

southend newbie. overcharged and bad service?

I tend to do as much of my shopping online as I can (with the exception of groceries and homebrew stuff), I guess I'm wired that way being that I work with computers for a living. But, the Colchester homebrew shop is online a couple of miles from me and the chap who runs it is always very...

    Beer related xmas pressies

I've been lucky this year with beer related pressies. I got a King Keg, several books on beer and brewing and a select box of 13 winter seasonal ales (which are going down quite well at the moment!). I get the impression that most of my family think I'm a drunk though! :s Dave

    Bl**dy Parcelfarce! Rant mode ON

I order some stuff from Amazon and the vast majority of it turned up middle of last week, over a week late. The only thing outstanding was the kindle for the mrs, that had been ordered first! They eventually tried to deliver it on xmas eve, while I was at work, so I got a card. I did go down...
