Very bitter lager from Festival kit

That's a shame. I made this recently and I'm very happy with it. My only issue compared to other kits I have made is that it is slow to clear. Colour is as expected and taste is smooth with a light hop finish. I think my ABV finished at 5.3%. You may just have been unlucky. I've had 2 batches of...

    IPA Kits

I didn't actually check that. It's a popular kit and it wasn't discounted so I'm assuming it wasn't short dated but who knows, you may be right.

    IPA Kits

Muntons west coast ipa is very nice but also very strong. My most recent batch of Youngs was quite bitter but previous ones were OK.

    Homebrew has defeated me :(

I started using a thermostatic hest pad recently. I quickly learned that ensuring the temperature sensor is securely attached to the side of the FV is vital. To this end, I have put a piece of plastic packaging (bubble wrap would also do) over the sensor to get good, tight contact with FV before...

Muntons West Coast IPA - progress and questions

I've made this a couple of times. It's really nice and hold the high alcohol content well. I bottle mine but you really feel it hitting after just one.

    Brewing temperature

    That's a good idea.

    Brewing temperature

I used fish tank heaters for years with no issues until one of them came apart in the FV. I could hear a faint buzzing in my room and after much snooping around, when I switched the heater off, the buzzing stopped. When I opened the FV, the glass tube of the heater had separated from the rest of...

    Brewing temperature

You could invest in a brewing heat mat that has a thermostat. I got the BrewingMate recently and it works well. The only caveats are I use a little sellotape to secure the sensor to the outside of the FV and I find it reads around 1 deg C lower when compared to a thermometer in the brew. I set...

Man Cave, who has one ?

    Absolutely

    Octopus energy

Yes. This needs to be reported to Octopus. Based on my experience of their customer service I'd expect them to take this very seriously.

    Wine kits recommendations

I didn't think of that cos my wine will be in a Fermonster with its wide neck at this stage.

I just use a mixing paddle. One of the ones with a flat blade with holes in it. It's a bit laborious and a wand would be faster I suppose. But it works for me.

Welcome and echo what old dog said.

    Making normal strength wine?

I've made a good few Winexpert kits and they all come out at around 13%. Your post doesn't mention any specific gravity readings. Did you record these at the beginning and end of fermentation?

    ABC craft series not clearing

Hello all. I've made a good few Winexpert Reserve kits that have all turned out fine. I thought I'd have a change and bought an ABC Sauvignon Blanc craft kit for a change. It fermented fine and a I racked if off into my Fermonster and added the sorbate/sulphite, degassed then the Keilselsol and...

    Festival kit low ABV

What Clint and others have said. Your beer will be fine.

    Wine kits recommendations

No, I've never brewed the Reserve kits short. The Classic kits I've made were more 'lightweight'. Hence for me, the Reserve range is more to my taste in terms of body. If you brew a kit short, you might have a bit more in terms of body but I think you will also have more in terms of ABV which...

    Wine kits recommendations

I started with Winexpert Classic Pinot Grigio but find that their Reserve kits well worth the extra cost working out at around £1 a bottle extra. Wife likes the Sauvignon blanc better than the Pinot G. For me, the Malbec is excellent. I'd suggest you start with something from the Classic range...

    XL Bully

My wife did not believe me when I told her about 20 people per year killed by cows in UK annually. No idea how many injuries and life changing consequences.
