Should I top up low level beer bottles? Beginner's error...

If you are using a bottling wand, you will find the wand displaces the perfect amount if the bottle is filled right to the top before removing (if that makes sense?)

What are you drinking tonight 2020.

Cracked open my GH bible DDH Pale Ale. Looks the part, smells the part and most importantly tastes the part. Head died away quite quickly but think that will improve with a bit of time (only 2 weeks in bottle). Absolutely luvverly. All that oxidation worry for nothing! Substituted the yeast to...

What are you drinking tonight 2020.

I hope thats a reflection in the glass and not some super mould in the bottle!

What are you drinking tonight 2020.

Mrs Threepwood was good to me on a trip to Morrisons earlier. At the other end of the spectrum from my simple Pale Ale, but absolutely delicious. 😁

What are you drinking tonight 2020.

Simple Pale Ale based on GH recipe. Sometimes nice to go back to basics and this hits the spot. So basic it is my cheapest brew yet, hence the name. Also the song rocks.

Errata: Greg Hughes, Home Brew Beer (2019 edition)

That struck me as odd also. 😂

Errata: Greg Hughes, Home Brew Beer (2019 edition)

p120, Double Dry Hopped Pale Ale, For the boil, Liquor 13 litres (23 pints), should read 27 litres (47 1/2 pints). Looks like the printed the mash liquor volumes twice.

I second that motion. Nervy about oxidation when bottling. Is oxidation a given in these situations, or is it avoidable if you take great care? I mean, I know oxygen will be introduced during bottling, but is it a definite that the beer will lose its desired colour, taste etc?

    When should I dry hop?

Good point well made. I didnt think of it that way but makes sense!

    What did you brew today?

It sure is. Been dithering on brewing it since I got the new edition as it is by far the most expensive brew Ive attempted so far. Fingers crossed it goes well! Really interested how the Verdant yeast turns out.

    What did you brew today?

It certainly smells it so far! Hoping the mucking about with airlocks doesn't affect it too much.

    When should I dry hop?

Im due to try dry hopping for the first time next week, but going by Greg Hughes book, most recipes say to dry hop for last 3 days in fermenter. He also says though, that adding dry hops when gravity is 1.020 will add more fruitiness. I haven't dry hopped before so am a bit nervous about...

    Brewing book recommendations

BYO Clone Recipe book. Great for, well, clone recipes. Or a starting point to tweak beers you like. Also good for making beers you have heard of but cant get hold of, like Heady Topper, for example. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0760357862/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_14mcFb2W7FT9S

Slight tang in stout. Grain or water issue?

Yeah, I wasn't sure but adding sugar was something (in my case) that was new to me and was also first time I experienced sourness. Likely 2 + 2 = 5 scenario. Interesting you mention darker malts and soft water though. Living in Scotland I definitely have soft water and the recipe had a fair...

Slight tang in stout. Grain or water issue?

Keen to see any possible answers to this. I bottled an Imperial Stout 2 weeks ago and it had a slight, almost sour tang to it. Never really experienced that before. I did read somewhere that adding sugar to the wort (demerera in my case, possible lactose in yours) can add a tang that dissipates...

What are you drinking tonight 2020.

Greg Hughes Baltic Porter. 6 weeks from bottling and getting better all the time. Need to keep my grubby mitts off and leave for the full 3 month conditioning...

What are you drinking tonight 2020.

Working my way through the new Aldi range. Some real ups and downs. Tempest are amazing for the price point. Che Guava had "guava flavourings" which is kind of off putting, not sure why it couldn't have been just "guava" and the rosė wine lager thing was a bit weird and very thin. Rest of the...
