    Re: Festival Razorback IPA Review

Hi Ady I left mine for 2 weeks before adding (all) the hops. Bottled 6 days later. Tried a bottle on Saturday (3 weeks since bottling) and its pretty good already. Good citrus hit, followed by a nice bitter aftertaste. Still quite cloudy but showing definite promise. Good luck with...

    Original/starting gravity

Airlock activity seems to have stopped! There is a good ring of dried stuff around the FV and on the underside of the lid, so it obviously had fun yesterday. I'm away all of next week so I'm just going to leave it until I come back and hope that it will have sorted itself out by then. Its...

    Original/starting gravity

Thanks for the replies. I think my hydrometer is OK - I checked it with water @ 20 degrees when I first used it (this is only my third brew) and it measured 1.000. The temperature at the time of reading would have been around 20 degrees, so I don't think that is the issue. I gave it a good...

    Original/starting gravity

I've just found a calculator (http://www.brewersfriend.com/extract-ogfg/) which suggests for the quantities of LME and DME that I used the OG should have been 1.046 and with a 'medium attenuation yeast' it should reach 1.013. Does that OG look better? I used Gervin GV12 rehydrated in cooled...

    Original/starting gravity

Hi All I had a slightly stressful/disorganised attempt at a Wherry kit yesterday (in hindsight it was probably a mistake to do it with an active toddler and heavily pregnant wife around!). To the 3kg of LME I added 250g of DME and chucked in a couple of kettles worth of boiling water (which...

    Hopping a premium kit

Hi Munkian Can I ask what hops you are planning to use, and how you are going to use them (boil, steep, dry hop etc)? I've got a Wherry kit that I fancy tweaking as well. Cheers Dave

    Re: Festival Razorback IPA Review

Checked the gravity again last night - now down to about 1.006. Hopefully will be the same tonight so I can bottle on Saturday (20 days). Had a taste of the trial jar. Someone earlier in the thread said theirs tasted of grapefruit - mine tasted of really cheap orange and pineapple squash...

    Re: Festival Razorback IPA Review

Hi All Hopped this on Sunday, with the plan to bottle next Saturday. I checked the gravity last Thursday and it was down to 1.008 and it still had a big foamy head. That foam had dropped by the time I hopped on Sunday, so I guess the fermentation had finished. Cheers Dave

    Re: Festival Razorback IPA Review

Hi Louis Thanks for your reply. I think I'm going to leave it alone until next weekend, and then chuck the hops in and leave for another week. Hopefully this will allow the hops to do their thing, and also give the yeast a bit more time to sink. I bottled my Festival Landlord after 2 weeks...

Yet another 'is it ready' question!

Hi all Temptation got the better of me and I tried one of my small test bottles on Saturday (after 6 days conditioning in the warm and a night in the fridge). Overall I think it was quite promising. There was a nice 'psst' when I removed the cap. The initial carbonation was quite good...

    Re: Festival Razorback IPA Review

Hi all I have had my first batch of Razorback brewing for 8 days now. I checked the gravity for the first time yesterday and it was down to 1.018 (from an OG of 1.052). There was lots of quite thick foamy stuff on top of the liquid in the FV. Because of this I decided not to dry hop at...

Yet another 'is it ready' question!

Hi Redron Good luck with yours. I will keep you posted on my progress. Cheers Dave

How to cold condition (no fridge or garage)

Hi sqrson That's very interesting - thank you. I think I'll see what the weather is doing in a couple of weeks and make a decision then - if the nights are still cool I think I'll go for the shed option, but if its getting warmer I may just stick them under the stairs (with or without the...

Yet another 'is it ready' question!

Hi beerhunter/Redron Thanks for the advice re: not letting the bottles get too warm. The heating isn't on much at the moment (a couple of hours a day) so hopefully they will be OK. I checked them this morning and the plastic test bottle is firming up nicely. Its still quite cloudy, but there...

Yet another 'is it ready' question!

Hi Redron I have to admit mine didn't taste great either - very bitter and hoppy. I had another taste just to make sure, and it seemed more promising - still not particularly nice, but the background flavour seemed OK (if that makes sence!). I reckon after a it of conditioning it will be...

How to cold condition (no fridge or garage)

Thanks for the replies. I agree changing the freezer blocks daily would be a pain, but if I get a good bottle of beer at the end of it, it will have been worth it! I have got a shed I could use, however I was worried about the temperature variation. At night it will be nice and cool, but...

How to cold condition (no fridge or garage)

Hi all I bottled my first brew (Festival Landlord) on Saturday and its currently sitting in the warm where it will stay for a couple of weeks. When it comes to cold conditioning I am not sure what to do. I don't have a nice cool garage to use or a spare fridge. I have an understairs cupboard...

Yet another 'is it ready' question!

Thanks for your reply. I checked the gravity again on Sat and it was still 1.012 so I got on and bottled it. Its now sitting next to the radiator in the spare room to warm condition - the waiting game begins! Cheers Dave

Yet another 'is it ready' question!

Hello Apologies in advance for asking a common question, but as a first time brewer I don't want to make any mistakes. I started my Festival Landlord kit 13 days ago. Its been at a fairly constant 18 - 20 degrees during that time (if the cheap digital thermometer I bought is accurate!). The...
