    Water treatment for beer kits

Hey Richard, I'm in the same water area as you and faced the same issue a few years back. You cant make good tasting pale beers from our water without treatment (although you can make good dark beers). I hate to contradict people, but it is the hardness or carbonate content of our water that's...

    Must have equipment.

In the past I've done Woodford Wherry, Nelson's Revenge and Admirals Reserve using just their own yeast without issue. If the yeast can be temperamental as DoctorMick suggests, I'd have a your Safale-04 as backup but pitch the Woodfords one. If it takes, you get to drink the beer as Woodfords...

Anyone use Dana or Boadicea before?

You're right, I've had a few of the M&S ones and found all of them just fine, just that one didn't light my fire.

If your fermentation doesn't start and you don't have a local homebrew, you're in a pinch. That yeast will be fine.

If your local homebrew shop isn't local, try Wilko. Chances are your yeast'll pick up - fingers crossed fella.

Anyone use Dana or Boadicea before?

I was thinking that whatever I do, it'll be done with more body and maltiness. It a tough one, one the one hand, I hate waste and don't want to not use them up. On the other, I don't want to waste time, effort and good ingredients brewing something that's disappoints me. Thing is, people must be...

On the yeast front, don't panic yet. i often don't see much sign of activation for 8 hours. My last batch took 12 hours to get going. If nothing happens by tomorrow, pitch another sachet. I did that 3 months back and the beer came out fantastic.

Hey Aphid, wrt using the copper coil (immersion chiller) to cool your wort, you definitely can get away with not using one at first. I have no tap compatible with a hose so have been unable to fast chill my wort using one. When my wort is finished, I let it stand until it's around 85 Celsius...

Anyone use Dana or Boadicea before?

It was thin, no body to it. It left me kinda smacking my tongue and lips together trying to detect what it was that I didn't like. Best I can say is that it tasted green. My wife said it had a kind of pissyness to it. I didn't not drink it because it was disgusting, I could have seen it...

Anyone use Dana or Boadicea before?

I was given 100g of Boadicea for my birthday, lucky me :-?... At the weekend I tried the M&S Single Hop Boadicea, I didn't finish it - that doesn't happen often! Since this thread was last written to in January, has anyone else made use of Boadicea? If anyone has a recipe that use that might do...

I've used 1 and 2ltr PET bottles in the past, it's fine but for best results you do need to pour into a jug with the 2ltr ones because of disrupting the sediment. These days I use Coopers OxBar PET bottles https://www.amazon.co.uk/Coopers-500ml-Amber-Plastic-Bottles/dp/B008MBLVEI. They're...

    Choice of pale malt

Definitely worth it, although I'm a little concerned at the moment that I have limited sense of taste :-( I did an experiment where I fermented half a batch with Safeale s-04 and half with us-05. I was anticipating two very different beers so it came as a shock and disappointment that I could...

    Choice of pale malt

One of my favourites too. Not only am I going to try Golden Promise out, I'm now going hunting for a clone recipe for Landlord. Still interested if anyone who has tried both Simpson and Warminster Maris Otter have an opinion on whether either is better...

    Choice of pale malt

Thank you sir. I payed a visit to Simpsons website a few mins ago. It's a nice, clear site and they have very detailed information about their malts. Also, the Golden Promise has an endorsement from Andy Leman, Head Brewer, Timothy Taylor & Co Ltd. I'm fairly certain if it's good enough for...

    Choice of pale malt

Hi all, I'm 4 brews into my AG career and have to buy some new pale malt but need some guidance... My local homebrew shop sells Warminster Maris Otter, Simpsons Maris Otter and Simpsons Golden Promise. Does one pick based on price or are there descernable differences between these malts...

Maximum volume wort from Braumeister 20L

I will definitely be taking your advice Hoddy, thank you for that. However, I kinda meant it more as a question on the practical and/or theoretical limits of the BM20. I probably didn't explain myself adequately  I have this notion that at it's simplest state, making wort is a...

Maximum volume wort from Braumeister 20L

I have a Braumeister 20L, I'm very novice with all grain brewing and haven't yet got to grips with the equations or software so I was hoping someone could help me out... if I wanted to brew a 5% pale ale, what is the greatest volume of wort I could get using my BM20L? I'm thinking that I load as...

    CO2 doohickey

Nice piece of repurposing tech there dad_of_jon! And the pressure barrel lid is definitely a possibility too. But Bigjas raised a valid question at the start - is it even necessary or am I looking for a solution to a problem that doesn't exist?
