    Gas cylinder extension tube

Thanks Aleman. I've been trawling the web looking for these, but have only come up with one described as "Widget World Interchangeable Gas System Starter Kit CO2 Complete To Fit Barrels With S30 Valve System". Pictures seem scarce! Is this the one you mean? I take it I could top up 2...

    Gas cylinder extension tube

When I last brewed some years back, using a King Keg with float system and the top tap, there came a point where I had to use the Hambleton Bard CO2 cylinder to get the beer out. New house, new problem. The ideal place for the nice full barrel is on a shelf with another directly above it so I...

A question about septic tanks - no, really!

Bribie, I'll have to look that out. Currently I'm using what seems to be bog standard this side of the pond - VWP, which lists itself as 5% non ionic surfactant, 6.5% chlorine based bleach and 20% phosphates. Maybe I'll try an unreagrded end of the new lawn for a tst of diltte solution as a...

Catering urn boilers - any use?

I don't do art, but still appreciate the diagram - 1000 words and all. Thanks Jamesb. Bribie, that looks fearsome - is there significance to the noose motif above the boiler? I'll struggle with the basics of malt extract for few brews yet methinks!

Catering urn boilers - any use?

Jamesb, The boiler arrived today - as its destined to be a Christmas pressie (to me!), I'm not allowed to see it yet. No great dramas as I've got my first batch maturing and second batch brewing so no spare barrels. My wife tells me its got an exposed element in the bottom. The brew kettles...

A question about septic tanks - no, really!

I wasn't sure which forum to post this dilemma in, so here goes.... We are looking at buying a property that has a septic tank system, as its not on mains drainage. My wife spotted that post sterilising brewing kit, pouring chemicals designed to kills bugs into a system that relies on...

Catering urn boilers - any use?

Thanks davesiv for the info, although it looks like I struck lucky and wont need to meddle! Jamesb, I take your point re the size, but as a second hand EBay special, it was too good to miss. I'm happy to top up - I'm only on ME at present anyway. Out of interest, have you fitted a strainer at...

Like it! I'll sort that when it arrives.

Catering urn boilers - any use?

Thanks for the reassurance davesiv and evanine - I just picked up a second hand one on EBay, so thats my Crimbo present come early I guess. With that and a malt extract boiling merrily on the cooker as I type, its a sucessful day for beer - so far! Out of interest, how did you disconnect the...

Catering urn boilers - any use?

Yes, its a Burco or similar I'm thinking of - the sort that makes welcome tea for the masses at the end of a cold day. I reckon it could make something even better to warm the tropps!

Catering urn boilers - any use?

Still new to this, but thinking of the future (eg Christmas and /or my birthday...) do catering urn water boilers make good wort boilers? I read about it on a blog, but lost the bookmark. Is anyone out there doing it? I presume it would be possible to fit a hop filter to the outlet to filter...

    Straining the wort

Thanks Frisp. Its post boil, but as I'm using malt extract and my grain and hops are in bags, boiling in a pan without a hop strainer, I wanted to give Newton a hand. On my first attempt, there seeemd to be quite a bit of solid matter floating in the wort- is trub a generic term? Does that...

    O ring grease

Brilliant - thanks Vossy1! Thats what I was hoping. I've got time to dig out the silcone or buy some more but its nice to know I've got a useable backup to hand.

    Straining the wort

Sorry to bombard the forum! Looking forward to Brewday 2 chez moi tomorrow. Malt extract method, with grains and hops due to go in in bags. After my first attenpt, the wort looked a bit turbid, so I strained it thougha kitchen seive. I've now bought a fine straining bag. Should I sterilise...

    O ring grease

I've just taken delivery of a second King Keg - the "instructions" mention lubricating the o-ring before use. Might account for why the first one (pressed back into servicer after oh so many years domant) need screwing down tighter than an MPs pet bird's bottom When I used to dive, I used...

Beer Engine 1.09 liquor volue - really basic question!

I have much to learn. Right now, I'm going to learn what beer tastes like. Only 3 weeks to go and it'll be homebrew...!

    Trial jars - any use?

I think the expression is - ! Thanks for so many answers, esp as they all seem to agree. I like the idea of using a cut glass crystal bud vase - dead posh, but probably woudn't get it past the missus..... I'd never thought about drinking a fermenting brew - but I'm certainly up for it! I'll...

    Trial jars - any use?

Just getting back into brewing (early days yet and malt extract at present - AG comes later) so coming up with basic questions I'd be grateful for some sage council on! Trawling the various on line stores, I see plastic trial jars advertised. I've never used one before - just dropped the...

Beer Engine 1.09 liquor volue - really basic question!

Thanks Jamesb, My "vessel" is a 20 litre pan - I've not invested in a boiler yet. I'll do what I did first time around - use 15 litres for the boil and then topup the wort with cold water. My main worry was that I was going to end up needing to accomodate more than 25 litres at some stage...
