Youngs Yeast Nutrient smells like bleach! Normal?

Never used the stuff before. (Tub say's for use with wine). Is it really meant to smell so pungent?

Geordie Scottish Export. OG 1.032, SG 1.009?

I made it up as directed, to the full 40 pints, but using 50/50 spray malt and brewing sugar. This is probably my third or fourth kit brew. I was a little worried that the OG was only 1032 as it seemed a little low but chose not to worry as I'd read on other forums that kits usually don't vary...

Real Ale + Pressure Barrel... Are they compatible?

I've brewed several ale kits. Whilst I enjoy drinking bottle condition beer I'm feeling a little lazy and I want to try a pressure barrel. As I understand it, a pressure barrel will help keep the beer fresh but, I also understand that the CO2 adds extra fizz to the beer. Is it possible to...

    Keg questions

I've just filled thirty bottles and the whole process of scrubbing, sterilising, and beering has taken the thick end of the weekend to do. I'm off to buy a keg. I've seen the plastic sort around: a simple tap at the bottom and some kind of valve at the top, with a cheesy wooden cask effect...

    Confused by hydrometer scale

Dumb novice question: The instructions on the box read: "...when the gravity remains below a constant 1014 °" but my hydrometer is marked: ".980, .990, 1.000, 10, 20 ,30 ,40" Does 1014 ° mean a little under halfway between 10 and 20 on my hydrometer?

Brew bucket. Should the lid be sealed tight?

I'm attempting my first home brew, a Woodforde's Nog kit. Not sure if I have the right fermentation vessel though. It's a Young's brew bucket with a plastic airtight lid; no airlock or anything. The beer is fermenting as I type. Should I snap the lid shut or leave it loose? I don't want to run...
