After 'Have a go at a simple AG'

I’ve not used build your own recipe before just order all from the Malts page. Sounds like it will make some decent stout/porter recipes. Adjust your grain bill to get the desired OG/ABV and then take a look at the style guide for porter/stout/imperial stout to give yourself a starter for ibu...

    Surfingobo’s brew day’s

Brew 5 Promised I wasn’t going to do another brew for a couple of weeks on Sunday. had a spare evening on Monday so cracked on with a summer lightning clone recipe adapted to my kit. All went very well, cooled to about 35C again, I seem to struggle to get it below this in the water bath in...

Good going! Once you’ve got over 10kg in the basket the delivery seems more reasonable!

After 'Have a go at a simple AG'

Bare in mind I’m only on my second AG brew but I’ve put these two together from other recipes online, scaled to a final volume in FV of 8L I bought myself 5kg each of Maris, pilsner and Vienna, and a kilo of cara malt and cara wheat, and 6 different hop varieties. Plan is to play with the...

    Surfingobo’s brew day’s

After a week in the bottle I couldn’t help but crack a bottle of brew 1 to see how it’s doing, the coopers brew a ipa. nicely carbonated, a little sweet but not as much as the sample jar at bottling time. A bit of a dryer finish coming through. I’ve gone from thinking this one will be a dud to...

    Giveaway-Lerway Fermentation Heating Pad

ITC-308 just purchased to go in a fermentation chamber (old fridge). Haven’t bought the heating element yet as it’s “supposed” to be summer but it would be really handy at the moment!!

    Surfingobo’s brew day’s

Brew 4 is AG number 1!! Went for a simple mosaic smash. All went swimmingly, took about an hour to cool to 35C in a water bath, at which point i poured to a Pyrex FV, and then took a further 3 hours to cool to 28C!! Lesson learnt. Target was 1.048 and I hit 1.041 for about 64% BH efficiency...

    Coffee

In terms of coffee beans, I buy a lot from rave, and I like that the packaging is compostable and the little metal clips that they attach the card to are so bloody handy to have on hand, I never seem to have enough of them!

    Coffee

If the gaggia isn’t yo your taste how about a la pavoni lever machine, I believe they go from about £250 second hand

    Coffee

Just an FYI on pre ground vs whole. If you wish to use a machine with an unpressurised basket like the flair then you will need to grind your own, it just won’t work with pre ground.

    Coffee

I’ve got a used gaggia classic, look for a pre 2015 and expect to pay about £150. If you can find one with a pid controller already installed then great. you need to budget for a decent grinder as well, check out the mignon at black cat coffee for about £350 or for a used grinder look for a...

    Capping glass bottles

Try again, put safety glasses/gloves on if that gives you the confidence to go for it. It took a lot more than I thought it would to cap a bottle first time!

    Interesting stoneware beer barrel

Thanks guys for the info. Really hoping to find someone who’s tried serving from one, as apart from treating it like a plastic growler, i.e. basically just for serving pre carbonated beer that goes flat in a day, I can’t see how to use it.

    Interesting stoneware beer barrel

I’ve got the rubber from the plastic tap which doesn’t seem to smell. Will look for a cork one though for maximum authenticity!

    Interesting stoneware beer barrel

Having started brewing recently, I have been gifted my great grandfathers ceramic beer barrel, that he used regularly to serve his beer at home (probably mostly home made from what I know of him) I’m looking for some advice on how to use it. I’m guessing it’s not going to hold pressure. Am I...
