    Ingredients ordering

At the moment I’m thinking 5kg of extra pale ale, 5kg floor MO and 5kg Vienna. I think that covers me for most styles!

    Ingredients ordering

Right, I have finished all of the base malts I ordered first time round! question for you all, do you just order a load of base malt and then brew to what you have in stock, or do you plan every brew before you order? last time I ordered 5kg of MO, pilsner and Vienna, plus a range of 1kg...

Can anyone recommend a decent lager kit?

I split it 3 ways, dry hopped one with mosaic and one with hallertau blanc. The normal one is tasty, the one with HB is turning into a really interesting slightly floral lager. The mosaic is an absolutely delicious light ale, but then I love mosaic!

    What did you brew today?

Had a go at brewing my own “house pale”. This is V1, I’m planning to develop the recipe until happy with it. 50/50 pilsner/Vienna base with a small amount of cara and carawheat. Challenger for bittering, citra and mosaic flavour, aroma and dry hop.

Why does my beer taste like stagnant pond water?

Does anything else taste off to you?? It is a symptom!

    AArgh, is it worth bottling

I dropped my unsterilised yeast packet into the wort a few brews ago, must have come out alright because I can’t remember which beer it was! You’ll be alright!

    first BIAB...help needed for 2nd!

And when the sink is needed for something else I just stick the kettle on a heatproof mat and leave over night. Typically still a little warm in the morning this way though.

    first BIAB...help needed for 2nd!

I brew 8L in a 15L pot. I could push it to 10L but my hob struggles with the boil already. I would say just brew 15ish litre and brew more often if I were you. I was desperate to jump straight in to buying a 35L kettle but to be honest I’m enjoying having the variety of different beers! I cool...

    Residual smell in FV

Hot water with a scoop or two of oxy seems to clean mine and eliminate smell. Leave overnight and rinse next day.

    Brew pot

Wilko 12L pot is actually 15L but not suitable for induction

August 2020 - British Pale Ales, Bitters and Milds

I’ve got my first attempt at a bitter conditioning at the moment. Will give it a go and send a bottle if it comes out ok.

    NEIPA revelation

Ive been trying any examples of the style I can find. Yet to find one I’ve wanted a second pint of. There’s something about it that I just don’t find as satisfying as a “normal” beer

    Buying on Ali Express

Anyone found a decent 35L ish electric kettle on there? Something to do Biab.

Willis Mexican cerveza, turbo cider tasting *****!!

I’m fairly new so take it with a pinch of salt but I’ve found all of my beers cidery or winey until at least 3 weeks, one is on 5 weeks and is just becoming drinkable. I think it’s the time it takes for the yeast to get rid of the sugar

    How important is the yeast?

I’m currently brewing as many different styles as possible using the same yeast, plan is to go back and do a lot of them again with a different yeast at some point to compare. I know this might not give me the best beer first time but I doubt it’s going to be horrible.

    BIAB kettle

I’m quite happy with the stove top Biab method, I don’t think I want to get on to recirculating as, as far as I can tell it is just a small bump in efficiency for a lot of extra cost and stuff to go wrong? Any other reason to go for the extras?

    BIAB kettle

Thanks for your reply, very interesting! I had was leaning away from the Klarstein because I didn't think you could set a target temperature but now it is definitely back in the running and with the false bottom works out at pretty much the same price as the digiboil albeit a tiny bit smaller...

    BIAB kettle

Also, does the klarstein just display the temperature of the wort or does it allow you to set it to reach a certain temperature and then just walk away? It looks as though you control the temperature with the knob next to the display?
