I ordered a new FV from GEB which arrived on Friday. Having looked at it, it has a big scratch on the inside which is covered in brown stuff, tacky to the touch and rough, like it's been sanded. Everything I've read about sanitising says to regularly check FVs and bin anything with scratches...

Not sure! It's from a catering kitchen - 10 to 12l probably. There's one about 3x the size, but I think my puny gas hob will struggle to get it anywhere. Think I'll stick to 5l at the moment anyway.

I've got challenger and mandarina leaf hops. The idea was just to get 5kg of maris otter to last me a while!

OK I'm feeling a bit more hopeful. What I might do then is keep it, order some more of what I meant to order last time, and keep this for when I've brewed a few. How long do crushed malts last for?

Funnily enough I saw that one, but I didn't enter because a) I was kind of set on a tube heater and b) I couldn't work out how I could control the temp.

My only real fear is wasting money. The batch I've got on at the moment I still can't work out if it's spoiled or not. 2 weeks is up on Thursday, and then 2 weeks chilled (I'm not sure why), but so far it's slightly sour. To be honest, that one didn't really cost me anything except the sugar...
