    Efficiency

Just wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom regarding brewhouse efficiency... What should I be recording on every brew to mark efficiency, other than OG etc. Today, my recipe stated I should have got an OG of 1.046, but I actually got 1.039. So quite a way off.. and if I get the OG...

    Pump Flow Meter

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00YPA6U82/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 I think one does, the description says that you set how much you want, and it'll switch the solonoid off when it reaches the limit! That's super cool!! Will buy one I think and see if it does what it says on the tin :D

Hopping - Bag, Spider or Dump it?

I like this idea, very straight forward and effective. As I am now going to be using a pump, I have ordered a couple of the netting things which screw to the inside of the tap. I can't remember what they're called... but they will stop any debris I think.

    Pump Flow Meter

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00YPA6XBG/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 Found this online.. any thoughts? It will do L/min, which is no good to me... but do you think "Quantative Setting" means, how much has passed through the flow meter? That would be ideal

    Pump Flow Meter

Does anyone use some kind of flow meter to see how much water / wort is passing through their pump? I've looked at various options, but I wouldn't know what is/isn't good and accurate. I was toying with the idea of setting up a wii fit board under the mash tun, and using it with a Raspberry...

Hopping - Bag, Spider or Dump it?

Very interesting and informative response. Thank you. So really, I think I was panicking over nothing. While it's good to remain vigilant about sanitation when brewing, a few little mix ups along the way don't necessarily mean a spoiled beer.

Hopping - Bag, Spider or Dump it?

Oh that's reassuring to know. Maybe I'll be okay then. How will I know if I've lost it to infection? Will it just taste foul? It's bubbling away like crazy in the FV, so the yeast is very much alive! Fingers crossed, but it's SUPER hazy!! Because there are so many hop particles in it, I might...

    Belgian Wit

Realised when weighing out for tomorrow that I actually only have 900g of flaked wheat, so I made an on the spot decision and added 900g of American White Wheat Malt to make up for it. Also found that my Saaz pellets are 2%AA instead of the 3.4% BF had, so changed that and of course it...

Substitute for 2-Row and Rice Husks

Hey, So I really would like to knock up a begian wit tomorrow. I have a recipe which looks right up my street.. but it asks for 2-row American Malt.. which I'm out of. I have Marris Otter Pale. Can I substitute? It also asks for Rice Husks to not block the Mash Tun. I don't have any Rice Husks...

Hopping - Bag, Spider or Dump it?

So, after a miserable end to Fridays brew day! I was majorly running out of time as had to go away for a Bday weekend in Bristol. I was short on time, and couldn't siphon the wort from the kettle to the FV. The tap got blocked in 5 mins, then the auto shiphon as a backup got clogged. It took...

Friday is my Birthday and also Brew Day!

Do you think it would be a bad idea to sanitise some muslin cloth and siphon the cooled wort into the FV, to filter out the hop residue and the malt bit which ended up in the wort?

    Black Friday Deals

Last night when the sale began, it took me an hour to get through the checkout. Forgotten what I bought now.. but I remember it being a pump, pump kit, some PBW and Star San, and pretty much anything else that looked cheap :) Thought, if I don't use it, it'll look good on the shelf :D

Friday is my Birthday and also Brew Day!

Mash and sparge seemed to go okay, but no matter how much I recirculated the wort in the mash tun, I still ended up with some grains in the wort. Maybe the grains I have are ground a little too fine? My mash tun is a false bottom style cooler. The second stage was better as there was more water...

    Black Friday Deals

I can vouch for the quality of the Northern Brewer products. They're big in the US. I can also vouch for beerhawk's customer service, as I've had to email them and they were nothing but helpful.

    Black Friday Deals

Yep, I got the pump and the connection kit, Although not sure what the connection kit is exactly! It's worth mentioning that further discounts are added at checkout. I was surprised. I got the pump for 60 and the kit for 25.

Friday is my Birthday and also Brew Day!

Awesome, hopefully it'll come out nice and I've not bitten off too much for my first brew. But I've put the time in to research, and get everything prepared and ready and made sure I have everything equipment wise that I need. So fingers crossed. I've almost got the water up to temp, and I...

Friday is my Birthday and also Brew Day!

Not sure why the link keeps doing that... https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/571462/punk-ipa-clone I will try adding the caramalt back in on the next batch and see if it's much different.

    Black Friday Deals

I'm a bit gutted by the beerhawk discounts. I've spent over £1000 with them in the last few weeks, could have saved half! :( But last night when I found the deals, I did buy a pump kit to upgrade what I've got. Looking forward to the ease of pumping things around...

    C02 Tanks and Suppliers

I use BOC. You have to sign up for an account over the phone before you can get the gas from the shop. It's cheap enough, £20 for a decent size cylinder.. but you have to rent to cylinder from them for about £3 a month too. My only gripe is that the cylinder (their smallest) is a little...
