    What am I doing wrong?

That's a brilliant idea :) I might look into that. Well this brew day was a disaster. No idea how I've ended up with just over 12L in the FV @ 1060. When it was supposed to be 23L in the FV at 1068!! What a disaster. I think I need to recalculate my boil off and water amounts. I've already...

    What am I doing wrong?

That's quite an operation there.. far more advanced than my 2 coolers and a boiler. I think I should organise a hermes though, as that would have saved me today. Sounds impressive that you have the hermes come on automatically if the temp drops (usually anyway lol). I'm a closet brewer...

    What am I doing wrong?

In this instance, rather than playing with the DME I may just leave it as it is, I was aiming for a high % beer anyway for the new year... but I'm happy to settle for the same beer a bit weaker. Luckily I wasn't aiming for 4-5%, as it would have ended up too low. I was shooting for 7% so it...

    What am I doing wrong?

Ah right... thanks for explaining it. I understand now :) And I'm less panicked.. I read it again when I transferred to the boil kettle and it was 1.051. I'll remember to test after the boil, and see what I've got then. Also, point taken about the 4 degrees. I need to pay closer attention to my...

    What am I doing wrong?

Ah I see what I've done. I got the sparge volume and strike volume mixed up. I needed 18L for Sparge and 16L for strike. And I used 18L for strike water. But good point regarding checking now, should check in the boil kettle before I turn it on. I used a refractometer and thought you didn't...

    What am I doing wrong?

I am brewing today and I've got the mash rest on at the moment. I missed the mash rest temp by 4 degrees c. I didn't think it would matter too much... but almost an hour and I just checked the gravity. It's coming in at 1.050 and I was aiming for 1.065! Miles off and I actually slightly went...

Fermentation Time - Am I waiting long enough?

Maybe I am not leaving it long enough. My next brew will be in the Fermentasaurus and I'll be closed transferring to keg. So no exposure. I'll leave it for 2-3 weeks and see if it makes a difference.

Fermentation Time - Am I waiting long enough?

Have I been leaving my brews in the FV for long enough? I (at the moment) tend to do primary AND secondary (although I'm getting fed up with secondary, and moving to Fermentasaurus so won't need to).. but my general rule of thumb is 1 week in primary, move to secondary (dry hop if needed)...

    Wheat Beer Advice

Mine went through the mash tun fine, but I've got a false bottom as opposed to a pickup. I've read about people needing rice hulls, and I did look for them, but I can't get them anywhere. Might have a change of heart with regards to the wheat beer, as I kegged my Punk IPA last night, carbed...

    Wheat Beer Advice

Yeah I think you're right. Apologies, as I didn't see your initial post. Must have posted at the same time as Slid. :) You were already bang on. One think I should mention... I'm not at all concerned about the cost of ingredients (I only have one hobby, which is making beer... so I don't mind...

    Wheat Beer Advice

Well I do like this idea... I guess that will kick the ABV up to where it needs to be. But just average light malt? And I guess I'd need to mix it up to disturb the yeast?

    Wheat Beer Advice

How about the best of both worlds? Bag the coriander and orange. Boil in just enough water to cover the bag, but only up to say 75-80c? (Should be hot enough to sanitise but not hot enough to boil), then throw the bag AND the water into the FV?

    Wheat Beer Advice

Just a thought... If I boil the orange peel and coriander, won't I be taking most of the flavour out of them in the boil? Which is maybe why Slids was suggesting boil them and throw the water in?

    Wheat Beer Advice

Oh that's interesting. Maybe it wasn't just me then, and maybe the wheat let me down. So, you think to just bag the lot and boil the bag to sanitise, then drop the bag into the FV?

    Wheat Beer Advice

Would that dilute my FG even more and weaken the beer? It's already almost non alcoholic haha. Or do you mean just a little bit of water? And by seive, you mean don't add the actual bits, just the fragranted water? In which case, the more water the more flavour?

    Inkbird itc-308

Is this only really useful for people who ferment in the garage or shed? I ferment in my office as it's the coolest room in the house, the ambient temp fluctuates between 18-20c. Which I thought was a good temperature range, so I don't use a fermentation fridge or anything.

    Wheat Beer Advice

As per a different thread, having missed the OG on my wheat beer by a country mile, and forgetting to add the bitter orange and coriander... It's been in the FV for 8 days now. No dry hop of course as it's a wheat... but what are your thoughts about dry hopping some bitter orange peel and...

Auto Siphon Drama - FV to Keg

I've purged the hell out of the keg, chucked 35psi into it and shook the hell out of it. Purged it again, then set it to 20psi and left it in the fridge over night. Tomorrow I'll do the taste test. I don't tend to taste my beers until they're serving temperature... because they always taste...

Auto Siphon Drama - FV to Keg

I've got one of those crappy cheap siphons where you can't take the end of. So it's for the bin then. Is my beer ruined if it bubbled with air in the keg? Or will the C02 sort it out?
