How to make a face mask

Just saying cover your face/ mouth & nose with something - preferably a mask but any item of clothing will be better than nothing. I've seen shop owners and a delivery guy using a bandanna.

    The Coronavirus thread.

One of the largest mask manufacturers is 3M - an american owned company, which is based in China. The Chinese Government virtually banned exports of PPE overnight when this started - so guess where all the stock is? Nice of them to sell us some.

    Polytunnel

That's a problem I have never heard about, and annoying. If it is just on the ridge would a white plastic strip work? say about 2ft wide so birds can't see the flies? Or traditional sticky flypapers. Those spiders need to grow up fast.

How to make a face mask

One thought on these home made masks is the fit over the nose. I've seen pipe cleaners used, but maybe copper wire would be another method. Or galvanised steel garden wire would probably be cheaper. - £1 a roll at Asda. I've also bought some Hepa filtration hoover bags to have ago at a basic...

How to make a face mask

But you could keep the mask for several days in a box, long enough for all live virus to die off. Also UV / ozone can sterilise it, but personally I would prefer time to be more effective. I did think of a method to protect NHS staff and commuters on crowded trains. It's basically a pilots...

    Collecting Bottles

Hobgoblin bottle labels used to slide off in water, then about 2 years ago they changed the glue and now are hard work. I did find something interesting with wine bottles though. Try peeling a corner, and if it does start to peel like an adhesive label, then leave it and rub some cooking oil...

How to make a face mask

I think that is the point. But what would be good is if the government would just say - cover your face and wear gloves in public to help prevent the spread. They don't have to say "mask". Virtually everyone has a scarf, You can use a strip of teeshirt or other clothing, but you can upgrade...

Seven arrests after 'illegal abattoir' found in Telford

Things are going feral already? I think you have to be licenced to kill certain animals for meat. Mainly to check on standards since the BSE & CJD came along. Nothing to stop you killing and eating your own chickens though. Only 4 leggeds. My pigs were registered, had a passport and ear stamps...

    The Coronavirus thread.

Well you can either put it down as gross incompetence or wilful negligence. Either they don't care enough to organise things properly, or there is a hidden agenda not to organise things properly. Just heard that Poland Government is to relax their shutdown on May 1st-3rd, allow gatherings...

Breweing right now - Have a question

I wouldn't say sneaky but just plain wrong would be ok. I've seen their set up and because it is huge the timings are all off anyway. You can scale the quantity fairly easily, but not the timings. When they say flameout hop addition then transfer to FV - that takes them over an hour and a half...

    The Coronavirus thread.

Is something happening to the price of bread flour recently? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wessesx-Mill-Strong-White-Bread-Flour-1-5kg/303542464587?hash=item46ac8a704b:g:heAAAOSwiI1eiOTH 1.5kg = £32 ? That's more than petrol !

    Anyone milling their own flour?

I haven't built mine yet as it's on the list, but have the parts of a pasta machine, kenwood chef motor, and lawnmower drive belts. I have seen they can get quite dusty. I have tried grinding flour in a nutribullet, and seems ok for spent grain anyway. Just no way of adjusting the particle...

Anyone harness the energy from brewing?

Maybe not on a small scale of homebrew, but if you scale it up to brewery proportions, then it would make sense to build a hydroponic greenhouse next door to it, and pipe the CO2 in there for increased yields. You could also use the waste heat in the winter at least, and to some extent the...

No kits left anywhere thanks to covid 19?

Erm, why do you need a kit to make ginger beer? :?: I started out using ginger, sugar and bread yeast.
  16. Richie_asg1

What kit beer are you drinking tonight?

Hercule Saison from B2B. Brewed it at a lower strength by leaving out some of the sugar, and it is smashing for a summer ale. Also had a hobgoblin clone that didn't carbonate so well, still tasty though. Just suppose I will have to brew it again to get the carbonation better....Oh the hardship.

Any way to "accurately" estimate end alcohol levels without hydrometer?

Would the alcohol content react with another substance? If it did to yield a precipitate that could be filtered then you could determine it bu how much precipitate you get. Or if it yielded a colour change again you could use a comparison for depth of colour. I think that you could fractionally...

    Better quality King keg cap

That's clever - and cheap, and great for parties. You do realise you have just invented "The Sub" torpedo? If the caps are still giving problems, you may want to add another sealing disc that has an O ring on the outside diameter, and is a wedge fit in the neck of the PB. Similar to a cork...

Almost makes up for the 17.8 Tons of PPE that Trump sent to China for free in February. Never mind where it is going - who is making it?

    Culturing bakers yeast.

The best bread I have ever made was with fresh & sticky bakers yeast from Asda. I can only get the small packets of dried yeast and so far most of my bread has been on the heavy side. Has anyone tried culturing and growing bakers yeast, and if so what did you use as the culture medium? How do...
