First BIAB. Need help with mash/sparge vols

For 12litres you could probably get away with a full volume mash and skip the sparge (though a spare can help efficiency). It over simplifies things but for a full volume mash you will need.... Your desired final volume + the dead space in your boiler + approx 1litre per kg of grain (lost to...

Home Brew Competition - September 17

Gentlemen, thank you very very much for the honour of judging this month's competition, I have enjoyed 8 incredible beers that I would happily pay money for and would be pleased to replicate. Using StrangeSteve's score sheet there was only 8 points separating the 8 entries (if including a late...

England to consider optout organ donation

O- blood donor and also a living kidney donor here. Would you pull someone out of a potentially burning car? Would you donate to a relative/family friend? Then I don't understand why you wouldn't want to help save someones life by being an organ donor if something happened to you...

    Apollo and Galaxy substitutes

https://www.morebeer.com/articles/homebrew_beer_hops I find the above link helpful when looking for hop profiles, but think this has been nailed above.

    New Competition rules.

I had a bottle arrive today. Rather than just give feedback could I score it and deduct a penalty from it's overall score? Or does that get too complicated/controversial?

Home Brew Competition - September 17

This month's entrants. Think I will stagger judging over this week, as 8pints in a night will have me in the doghouse... Best of luck gents looking forward to them!

September is the first month of the new schedule so the category is American Pale Ales so that includes Pales, IPAs, American Wheat Beers, DIPAs, BIPAs etc. I think I can accept under the pale banner. :-)

    Thinking of starting again

I've found alternating a dark beer or something else that needs a long condition with my hoppy brews helps. I bottled my Xmas brew at the start of Feb and have allowed myself just a bottle a month to see how it has been developing.

Introduce a friend to home brewing

I thought it would be great to do a kit while the mash/boil was on to show there are options. I donated some kit that came, with the mini kegs I sold on to mickdundee, to a friend who has done a couple of kits but again young family and work have hindered his progress.

Will leave the comp moderators to make the final decision but I'd happily sample (version 3 of) your steam beer again. :-)

    Hop recipe?

    Strike temperature question

I usually need to get my strike water upto 72-75degrees to ensure I mash in at between 65 and 67 degrees for my mash. I can't recirculate so don't know if mashing in lower and recirculating and continuing to heat will give the efficiency boost you have seen.

    Hop recipe?

I stumbled across hopping for flavour with "equal" additions at 10, 5 and at flame out and then dry hopping for aroma with equal total amounts used for flavour. I use a calculator like brewers to see bitterness, bare in mind the higher the alpha acid the more bitterness they provide. Your 17g...
