What minimum equipment for 1st AG brew

My gas hob uses propane, off a 19kg bottle. But, being fixed to an electric grill and oven, isn't exactly loose!

    Brewzilla gen 4.1?

Not sure, having seen negative reports, when this was first released, elsewhere. Does the UK version have a glass or plastic sight tube? At least with a continuous stainless steel pipe, there's a good chance of being able to keep it clean. Checking volume can be difficult, when malt pipe...

ASDA red grape juice, sultanas and black forests fruit wine

Replies here, saying store juice is likely SG 1.070. SG drop from 1.070 to 0.990 gives ABV 10.5%. Diluted 50% would give 5% or so. I like my red wine around 12% ABV.

ASDA red grape juice, sultanas and black forests fruit wine

Not sure if this is cost effective, for larger batches, compared to wine kits. I've looked at trying supermarket grape juice, a few times, but 23L wine kit always seemed better value. Presently, Asda juice, £2/litre, so £46 per 23L. While (reasonable quality) Beaverdale 23L kit, is £45 or £46...

    30 Y.O. Elderberry. Bottling today.

Back in 1994, while youngest son was just a bump. Self, and the bump carrier, picked loads of elderberries, which ended up as 5 gal elderberry wine, and 1 gal elderberry port. Have just been bottling the last aged gallon! One bottle will be part of son's 30th birthday present. Last bottling...

ASDA red grape juice, sultanas and black forests fruit wine

Yeasts can ferment well beyond their quoted alcohol tolerance, given the right conditions. I wouldn't want to rely on S05, with listed tolerance of 11%, stopping naturally at some point, 12% or whatever. Then bottle it, assuming it woundn't ferment further. After having a few wine bottles, on...

    RAPT advanced Brewzilla profiles update

Brew today, and all 'advanced options' set, came through, to the BZ. Other change, is that profile control (that's also shown when starting a profile), now shows profile steps in a scrollable text list (rather than previous graph). List, includes heater %, and sensor diff, figures. Good, that...

    RAPT advanced Brewzilla profiles update

Seeing the "Show Advanced Options" toggle, in RAPT profiles, for first time today. It could have gone live, anytime in last 4 weeks (when I last looked). The option is toggled, for individual steps. I guess if one step sets Heating 50%, and the next step doesn't set heating%, then previous...

Brewzilla Gen 4 advice and experiences

If recirculating during mash, even very slowly, then water under the false bottom is not dead space. But water between the malt pipe (above side perforations) if you're using it, and side wall is. Unless you recirculate water there, 'outer revirculation', by sticking recirc pipe down a lifting...

BIGGEST Balls up to date!, what’s your biggest fail?

Sounds painfull. I wear a rubber glove, when rinsing out malt cans. But still need to be carefull, not to end up pouring boiling water into glove, which would be worse than over bare hand. A person died, quite a few years back now, when a spilt pan of boiling water landed mostly in his wellies!

Sort of Stuck Mash and Burnt Brewmonk!

For light cleaning, I use 'Bar Keepers Friend' (powered seems better value than liquid). It's acidic, that's meant to rejuvinate the stainless steel surface, and reduce pitting. For a heavy burnt layer, try with boiling water, and a stiff (wooden) scraper. Possibly with 1 Tbsp caustic soda...

BIGGEST Balls up to date!, what’s your biggest fail?

Did exactly the same, forgot malt pipe (BZ 4), last month. When brewing Rongoteus (god of rye), beer. Was about to drain off, as you did. But brew day buddy, convinced me to just proceed. Glad I did, as it worked really well. It ended up, with my being able to do, my first 'floating sparge'...

    Tube heater

With a given conduction coefficient, from fv to sensor. Decreasing heat conducton from sensor location to surroundings, using HD foam etc, will improve sensor reading accuracy.

Commercial Swing-tops vs Homebrew seller Supplied

Disagree. I've had quite a few swingtops (from 'The Range' and 'Dunelm'), with very weak mechanisms, that could hold only very little, probably zero, pressure. These are fine for wine and liquors. Hacker-Pschorr; Aldi 3 grain; Lidl lemonade; and Grolsch swingtops, have all given me good...

Boosting ABV in a Porter Recipe

Yes proportional. Though I went with de-husked roast barley (7%), which is meant to give less harsh astringency (tea-bag tannin flavour). But rather than struggling with a big mash, maybe do a partial mash recipe. Replacing part of pale malt grain, with LME or DME added during boil. For my...

    Tube heater

A Watts a Watt, wherever it comes from. Though if the tube overheat cut-out trips, then it's not supplying Watts all the time. You don't say how many 40W bulbs you'd been using. Even if it was just two, so 80W. Thats more heat than from one 60W tube. With the weather turning colder now, things...

    Mesh size - hop bag

My Hop spider, used during boil, is a very fine mesh. I recirculate through the hops to ensure good utilisation, but with 50g or more of hop pellets from 15/20min, the spider blocks. And overflows unless flow kept right down. But even when it oveflows, I've not had pump cloggig issues yet (BZ...

spider monkey ipa - suggestions please

Just bottled & barreled today, at just on the FG of 1008. Colour about correct, pictured in PET bottle (pressure test). And taste seems close, given it's very sharp still. Was planning to dry hop for 10 days, once vigerous ferment over, which happened at 2 days. But primary ferment, in bucket...
