Grain Mill recommendations and grain crush for Brewzilla Gen4

My BZ gen4 now has recirc mod. Giving split recirc, between inside malt pipe & outside malt pipe (via one lifting hole). This allows max flow at all times, even during the initial 15min grain bed rest. Original recirc pipe goes to outer recirc, with valve usually left fully open. 2nd...

    Electrical connector advice

Flex straight out, through a strain relief connector, can meets specs; needs a smaller hole; & is less likely to fail or cause power loss (while overheating). Contacts in any power connector will corrode/tarnish with time. A heavy load can bridge corroded surfaces by making temporary micro-spot...

Reducing trub when using a hop spider

When is that 15 min from, ... when chilled to fernent temp? In a range of beer styles, I've never had any floaters, always using a full PF tablet in 23L.

Reducing trub when using a hop spider

Sounds like a big % loss. It might be better to keep the flour in the grainbed, by recirculation if necessary. I often do Heffweizens with 55-60% wheat malt in my BZ Gen4. Wheat, being huskless, has lots of flour. Used to have stuck mash, but my method now is: 1) dough in with minimal...

    Pressure Barrel for lager?

14 PSI sounds good. Main problem I've had with King Keg (top tap) is S30 pressure relief, opening at too low a pressure. Doubling up on the rubber sleeve used to work well, with the brass S30 connector. But this doesn't seem possible (not enough room) with the redesigned stainless steel...

    Glass or Plastic for Bottling

Glass probably better for storage 6month+. But for a homebrew, consumed within a few weeks, it may be better in PET. Especially if no other way of purging oxygen is available. I've never tried carbonating beer in PET, but now quite tempted to try Coopers bottles, for a comparison.

    Glass or Plastic for Bottling

Some people still get good results, barrel ageing non-soured beers, in wood (oak) barrels. I'd guess these (even when full) are still much more gas permeable than PET bottles. So with some beer styles, maybe oxygen does help. Permeability testing done on various PET beer bottles, in a 100% O2...

    First timer advice on heatpads

Yes. Steady state temperature, from a probe inside an immersed tube would be exactly the same as from an exposed probe. But after any change in temperature, the enclosed probe reading would always lag a while longer, this would lead to increased temperature swings, around the desired temp...

Bizarre experience: mash turns to milk

You mentioned having a false bottom, so the advice to stir isn't going to dislodge flour once it's settled. I've had one Weizenbock batch that burnt, in a BZ gen4. Elements had overheat cut out during boil, but managed rest of boil at reduced power. The Weizenbock was 55% wheat malt (TMM medium...

Im all a quiver with excitement - BZ gen 4 delivered

While adding grain, I now always outer ricirc at max rate, with recirc pipe poked down one lift hole. This should help keep the flour that drops through, in circulation. Flour otherwise tends to settle out, forming a solid layer on base, which can later scorch. Particularly when using a high...

Im all a quiver with excitement - BZ gen 4 delivered

Is that on a gen4 without a HED? I went for a HED, after seeing it was meant to prevent possible issue from majority of wort flow flowing near centre, so bypassing sensor and much of the heat plate. Is having mash set 68°C, but recirc 63°C, maybe due to that issue? With HED, I find pump flow/...

    First timer advice on heatpads

I just meant how the difference between 'average' liquid temperature, and the sensor temperature, varies with sensor location due to temperature gradient. With say a 15°C desired ferment temperature, and surrounding air at 10°C, temperatures of the FV outer wall might be: 11°C near top of...

Brewzilla dead - burnt out socket

I'd solder your connector, if you were nearby. If you have a local facebook group, it could be worth asking for help there. If there's a little slack in the ribbon cable, could cut it either side of hole, then reconnect using ribbon crimp IDC (insulation displacement connectors). First, just...

    First timer advice on heatpads

Where heat comes from a heat pad, and the ambient temperature is much lower, there is likely to be a vertical temperature differential (excepting during vigorous ferment). Different sensor positions, wont change the vertical differential, they just need different offsets. Any offset needed...

BZ gen 4 heat diffuser plate. A question re fitment.

Manufacturing tolerances don't seem very good. The g4 I received had an oval shaped outer body at base. Resulting in false bottom being a good fit one way, but with 2.5mm edge gaps on other axis. BTK supplied a replacement, which was much better. On my g4 35L, if I line up a false bottom foot...

Refilling a sodastream bottle - help!

Not sure about sodastream, but guess it will be same as a an S30 cylinder, in being filled with liquid CO2, not CO2 gas. A gas fill, wouldn't get you far in pressurising anything else. Normally, a CO2 cylinder, such as pub or welding one, with regulator, is designed that when upright, it...

BZ gen 4 heat diffuser plate. A question re fitment.

I have the G4 35L with heat plate. Purchased Oct 23. Tye base hsits firmly on it's three feet, and certainly doesnt rock. I've seen something about later models having the temperature probe moved, to further away from edge (where more wort flows). And that with early models, the heat plate...

De Gunking brand new shiny stuff like a BZ.

You want to recirculate (and a also run through drain tap), while cleaning, to clear inside of pipework & pump as well. Circulating at boil temp would likely shift most of any surface oil, without needing much detergent. Maybe a couple of drops, if any oil film appears. Following each brew...

Brewzilla Gen 4 advice and experiences

Haven't tried myself, but came across recent post on this. He said outside, so bag only has to catch a few escaped husks + flour. After removing malt pipe, he puts boil hops in the bag, better efficiency than spider & one less thing to clean. But didn't say if he emptied any husks first (to...

Brewzilla Gen 4 advice and experiences

Best do a cold fill. Let temperature stabelise - till internal and BT probe readings stop changing, then set CAL1 point (to match BT reading).
