    Youngs Red India Ale

Thanks terrym. I didn't think of that and unfortunately, I didn't weigh the bag of sugar that comes with the kit - I just added it to the mix. Hey ho, I'll do that next time I make this kit and see what the calculator says.

    Youngs Red India Ale

Just set up my second batch of this kit and once again I got a starting gravity of 1.052. The kit doesn't give any clue as to the intended SG but given I got the same result twice would make me think I've done an OK job of setting this up. The kit does state a final gravity of below 1.010 which...

    Bulldog, Evil Dog Double IPA

If you browse around the forum, you'll find 3 options. Hop teabag as you describe, putting hops into a large muslin bag or putting loose hops straight into the fermentation bucket. Its really down to what works best for you in terms of convenience and taste of your beer. The object of the...

    Priming Sugar- which to use?

I've stuck with glucose for kits that don't provide any primimg sugar cos that's what is supplied with premium kits such as those from Youngs and Festival.

    Time to Dry Hop

Personally, i would dry hop into primary FV then rack prior to bottling.

    De-gassing overly carbonated bottle-fermenting beer

Had a batch of Festival Summer Glory in PET bottles. Noticed several had leaked after a week of carbonation. When I opened one of these, it fizzed and foamed all over the place. So much so that the sediment was getting stirred up. As these were in screw top bottles, I carefully opened each one...

    Carbonating questions!

Can you or terrym enloghten me as to why you'd squeeze out the air from PET bottles before capping? I thought that the yeast needed the small amount of oxygen in the headspace in the bottle to get going again. Plus, as the bottle will initially 're-inflate' with CO2 before pressurising, won't...

    Extract Kits

130g of glucose should be plenty. Assuming you mixed it in evenly and carefully, just give it some time. Your beer needs to condition as well as carbonate and both of these will contribute to the appearance and taste of your beer.

    Sodium percarbonate..

I was also looking around for supply. Reasonably priced at £11.85 for 2kg at biolindo.co.uk. however, then my usual supplier came up trumps so didn't order from here.

    Mold inside bottle

A second bucket with a tap and a filling wand would be a good investment. You might also want to weigh up the pros and cons of batch priming. Fwiw, i only ever added sugar to individual bottles once. Batch primed ever since.

    Primary, secondary and conditioning stage

That's what I use. Never had a problem. 5g per litre, 20 mins contact then I do give things a quick rinse even if this is claimed not to be necessary.

    Festival New Zealand pilsner.

I've made a lot of Festival kits and the quantity of brewing sugar will vary depending on the intended final ABV assuming you get down to the predicted final gravity. So, if all goes to plan, the 350g will get you final ABV as stated on the kit. I've always found Festival kits to be fairly...

    St Peter's Cream Stout

Last time i made this i batch primed with 125g glucose. Was aiming for 2.3 vols CO2. That might be a little much for some stout or ale aficionados but i like all my beers to have some life about them.

    New Member saying hello!

Welcome. The Old Suffolk definitely improves with age as will your St Peters cream stout.

I need ideas for cider for the mrs

Agree. I've made the Bulldog strawberry and lime cider but from what i recall it was apple juice concentrate with strawberry and lime favouring powder.

Busy times from home brew shops

I can only echo all the positive comments regards brew2bottle. They are my 'go to' supplier and given the circumstances, remain very efficient. I've also just taken advantage of their 'email when item is back in stock' by snagging myself some Razorback IPA.

    Youngs American IPA

There really is no right or wrong about whether you add the hops loose or bagged. The object of the exercise is to extract as much hop flavour into your beer as you can. If you bag the hops, you need to make sure the bag (or bags) are big enough as you need enough space for the hop pellets to...

    Festival Summer Glory Golden Ale

This is one of my favourite kits. I made it as per the instructions. I have made other kits with larger amounts of hops as I do enjoy a hoppy IPA but I didn't think that the 25g with this kit was too little.

    Bulldog, Evil Dog Double IPA

I always open these hop teabags and drops the hops straight into the primary bucket - same as i would with any other kit.

Beer Gravity Not Changing - Please Help! :?:

Last time i made this it started with sg of 1.056 and got down to 1.008 in just under 2 weeks at 22 deg C. I use an aquarium heater to control temperature. I know others have commented that it can take a while to finish. Thats not been my experience so maybe this yeast likes a consistent...
