    Grainfather cherry popped

I had a hop spider for one brew. I'm in the "faff to clean and affects hop utilisation" camp. It was both those things.

    Grainfather cherry popped

Good efficiency there! I've never thrown away any wort. I usually get close to but not exactly the quantity I'm after. Had a brew night last night and sparging took quicker than normal, about 15 minutes all in. I usually like to sparge for a bit longer to ensure the grains are rinsed as much...

    Grainfather review after 100 brews

Another evening, another grainfather brew. I will have to take it gently as it's almost on its way out, apparently. Tasty beer to get the creative juices flowing. "One day son, you'll be a big fermenter just like your mum and dad!" Tucked away for the night with its midnight snack of...

    Grainfather review after 100 brews

Grainfather owner here, I'm up to about 70 batches on it. I was brewing once, occasionally twice a week for a short while. No sign of it burning out or anything like that. And I'm not going to worry about it until it happens either, if it does. I'd get another one tomorrow if it did happen to...

    Donald Trump.

Why is it unfair? That's politics and that he's doing what he's said he would in his election campaign is the reason he's come into criticism. Because people don't believe what he's been doing is right or fair. Why should that he's implementing (to a degree) what he said he would do stop those...

    Donald Trump.

I'm struggling to see your point. Why shouldn't the media or Hollywood luvies or whoever else criticise him? Why shouldn't anyone criticise anything? If you disagree with someone or something, wouldn't you want to make your opinion known? The media has no requirement to be completely impartial...

He needs to stop drinking entirely, whether in or out of a vehicle.

    BREWCON...2018

I went last year and will be going again this year (got my early bird ticket). There was definitely issues with the sound, but the presentations I went to were really interesting and while the audio spoiled it a bit, I still got enough information out of them. Glad to hear they're putting the...

    Belated intro

Cheers Paul! I'm on the Grand Union down in London. Have vague plans to head up north at some point in the next year or so but we shall see what happens! I would certainly recommend it, it's a great lifestyle although doesn't suit home brewing much, unfortunately!

    Belated intro

Hey all, Joined a few years ago when I was living in Australia but didn't get the opportunity to contribute. Have since returned back to the UK and finally, after a year and a bit, am getting back into brewing. I was a fairly prolific brewer in Australia and used to have three beers fermenting...

    Newbie Needing your Knowledge

Probably won't have done it any harm to be honest. Even if it has, it's your first beer, it won't be perfect anyway (or maybe it will! I hope so). I'm on the side of giving beer good aeration before pitching the yeast - I have an o2 cylinder and aeration stone to do this. But you can go as far...

    Boris gone.

Wow, it's all here. Remoaner (and remoner), snowflake, "affront to democracy", losers etc. All the soundbites, all the cliches. I wish I had my Brexiteer Bingo card to hand. I'd have a full house. Bad losers is something you use to describe a child who dropped their egg at the egg and spoon...

    Bru'n water water input help!

Thames Water got back to me with an average alkalinity value for the area, which was 200.8. I've added that to my Bru'n Water profile and the numbers are looking better now! Thanks for your help Martin!

    Sparge water??

Depends what you want I suppose. If you want to hit your predicted gravity, keep checking gravity while you sparge and stop when you hit the number or if you want volume, keep sparging until you get your required volume.

    Bru'n water water input help!

Ah, thanks very much Martin. I actually purchased the supporters version a little while ago (but was intimidated by all the information!) I should have another look. Otherwise I might get in touch with Thames Water and ask them if they can provide an alkalinity value as well. Seems like a bit of...

    False bottom

Can't see how grain isn't going to sneak under that. Maybe try a bazooka tube, bit like this https://www.bridgewaterbrewing.co.uk/bazooka-tubesbottoms.html

    Naming beer

My beers are all named after one of the entries in the Viz book "Roger's Profanasaurus". Won't repeat them here.

What's the 1 bit of advice you wish someone had given you, which you'd pass on to a new brewer?

Fermentation temperature control! The difference between an OK beer and a great beer (assuming everything else is right)

Homark Beer Engine - advice needed!

I eventually passed this beer engine onto another home brewer and got an Angram. Bought a 10L cask, tap and the rest of the gear. Worked a treat! I had hand pulled real ale. Rare in Australia. Since then I've returned back to the UK so the need for my own hand pulled real ale isn't so dire.
