How often are you making up for lost gravity points in AG?

So, I have now done 4 all grain brews and I'm missing my gravity points. I know I can make it up with DME but wondered if I'm missing something? I batch sparge and all of the brews have been Brewdog recipe clones (are these unrealistic targets for home brewing?) My temperatures are spot on and...

    Water pump for wort chiller

I did wonder that, so I thought about freezing bottles of water and ice packs to chuck in the tub. I get your point about the waste of electricity, if nothing else it will stop the rivers of Babylon coursing down my drive. I will look into counter flow chillers.

    Water pump for wort chiller

Excellent, that's the answer I need to hear.

    Water pump for wort chiller

The waste of water when chilling my wort makes me wince so I was thinking about a water pump in a big tub of ice water which I can recirculate. I have have seen this one in Toolstation for under £40. Has anyone used this method or any better ideas? My main concern is that it may be too...

    Secret Santa Beer Swap 2020!

Is this the best place to ask.... Posting your home-brew? Do you just pack it as secure as possible and ask the courier not to break it? I guess it would need a few days at the other end to settle any sediment that has been shaken up? Is it lucky dip on couriers or some better than others (or...

Squirrel Brows orange infused pale ale

Sounds nice. Thanks for the advice.

Squirrel Brows orange infused pale ale

Maybe it was the 4kg of mango I used then?!:laugh8: I was planning to do an orange tinged IPA soon and am debating about the extract liquids but don't want it to taste fake if you know what I mean? Zest may be the way forward but not sure how much to use for a 20L batch.

Squirrel Brows orange infused pale ale

Are the orange juice sugars converting to alcohol? I did a mango one and it cranked up the ABV quite a bit. How do you control it whilst keeping the flavour?

    Stainless steel FV

Thanks, yes I was thinking that it's probably easier to keep clean as I learned that scratches in plastic can cause problems. Your recommendations look good but I had not even thought about fermenting under pressure. This hobby loves my wallet :laugh8: luckily the beer is tasting good.

    Stainless steel FV

I have been fermenting in a plastic Coopers FV but will be upgrading for my next brew. Are the cheaper Stainless steel FV's like the grandfather and Mangrove Jacks worth it or will i be chopping that in within a year and spending even more? I generally do a beer every 2 or 3 months and can't see...

    Elderflower 'Champagne' Sweetness

I tried it for the first time this year and mine is lovely and sweet but only 3% :laugh8: You will get diabetes before you get drunk. To be fair I was not looking for strength just that nice elderflower flavour. Next year I will be doubling up the volume and ABV

    Waxing/oiling wooden floors/stairs

Unless you need to remove stubborn paint or rough parts of wood then 120 grit should be fine. 80 would be enough to sort out rough parts. I wouldn't over worry about sanding too smooth on an old stair case as when you clean up with meths before you oil, the grain should open up. It tends to be...

Bottle art - I want to see your best homemade labels

I made these and they are dishwasher proof. I just use a different coloured cap for each brew.

    Stronger than predicted!

Something I failed to mention as I thought it was of no consequence is that I used Clarity Ferm before adding my yeast. I have been listening to a podcast about gluten free beer brewing and to be fair 70% of it went over my head but it was mentioned that yeast loves the enzymes used to knock...

How to remove bottle labels the easy way.

I used to use WD40 but now use the alcohol hand wipes like wonder wipes. Still requires elbow grease on certain glues though. Obviously good old soapy water is the first port of call.

    Waxing/oiling wooden floors/stairs

I think it's the PolyX. Personally I would stain the wood and then apply 2 coats of matt clear Osmo. Staining is another can of worms! ideally you should have a sample piece which you can test on. An oil based wood dye like blackfriars may be your best option, it's quite permanent though...

    Waxing/oiling wooden floors/stairs

I would use paint stripper on the painted parts. A heat gun could scorch the wood and you would have a job sanding that out. After stripping, clean up with meths then sand it. I wouldn't wax them as you will have to keep on top of that in future as it wears. I would stain, if required and then...

    Stronger than predicted!

Yes, sorry, I meant .003. Okay, just ruling out where any other errors may have occurred, the mash was fine then (for my standard). For such a relatively cheap bit of kit I may order another hydrometer just to rule out that possible error. Tasting the finished product should reveal any tastes...
