    Small Batch Irish Stout?

Update: I managed to rack the stout to my bottling bucket today, ready for bottling on Wednesday evening. After the quick stir 4 days ago, the FG got to a steady 1.012, so I am more than happy with the outcome. I am also very impressed with the CML 'Midland' yeast which gave a pretty firm...

    Small Batch Irish Stout?

So, 12 days in the FV and a quick gravity reading tonight. Predicted to go to 1.012 but currently at 1.015. I would have thought, after 12 days it should be virtually done 🤔 Anyway, I will take another reading tomorrow and see were we are. If it's still at 1.015, would it be worth a quick stir...

    Small Batch Irish Stout?

Brew day was yesterday and all seemed to go well. I mashed with only 14L (instead of the 15.6L from Brewfather calcs) as I had an issue with my stockpot leaking through a handle rivet last time, knowing I could liquor back into the FV. 80% Maris Otter, 8% Roasted Barley, 7% Brown Malt & 5%...

    Small Batch Irish Stout?

Hi Darrellm, I would really be interested to see the recipe. I have enough grain (I think) to experiment a bit, which is all part of the fun. Thanks

    Small Batch Irish Stout?

After a bit of a play on Brewfather, I have decided to go with 80% Maris Otter, 8% Roasted Barley, 5% Brown Malt and 5% Oats. Hops will be EKG to give around 31 IBU. Hope it turns out OK

    Small Batch Irish Stout?

I did wonder about the roasted barley as I am sure I read somewhere that a maximum of 10% of the total grain bill was suggested. Anyway, I will play around with grains and amounts on Brewfather and see what I get.

    Small Batch Irish Stout?

Hi Jim, Thanks for that. Simple enough especially as I have plenty of pale malt. I take it the oats were just good old rolled oats?

    Small Batch Irish Stout?

Having always said, 'I am not really a stout drinker', before Christmas I brewed a stout, mainly to give to a neighbour. This was based on a Coopers Irish Stout kit but pimped as per suggestions from @terrym. Well all I can say is that my neighbour didn't end up with too many bottles as I...

So, racked to my bottling bucket yesterday and bottled today. Amazed at the clarity. Obviously did something right 👍

2Kw induction hob on the way, so it won't be long before I can judge its performance. Thanks for all your responses

@stubrewworx what volume do you have in the pan?

    Induction Hobs

Thanks @Tanglefoot & @Drunkula for the information. It seems that both of your brew pots are bigger than mine (20L) so the bit I was worried about, ie the pot overhanging the hob, isn't really a problem.

    Induction Hobs

So, having completed my first full volume (11L into FV) AG BIAB brew on Sunday, using the wok burner on my kitchen range, it seems that I am now banned from doing so again! SWMBO said something about a smell, but I think she was exaggerating :laugh8:. Anyway, I am now looking at how best to...

Have a go at simple AG

I used Safale S-04. For the chilling stage, I did actually use ice packs in the last couple of sink water changes which did seem to help, but a chiller coil is on the list to make. Thanks for the link. And as for what's next, well, I reckon as my last but one 'pimped kit' (Coopers Irish Stout...

Have a go at simple AG

Well, this 'dark-side newbie' now has around 11 litres of wort in the FV, in my water bath. All in all it took around 4 hours from filling the 19L pot to pitching the yeast. Doughing-in was done at 72.1C which dropped to 67.2. Pretty good heat retention with 65.5C after the 60 minute mash...

@matt76, really appreciate your input. With 66 AG brews, you must almost be a 'black belt of the dark side'! Anyway, I take on board your comments about limited gain from a mashout and will try a straight 60 minute mash. The 75c starting temp was taken from Clibits OP where he said that is the...

Wondered how long it would be before my error was picked up 🤣 That's the trouble with trying to do many things at once. Better make sure my head is screwed on properly before I start my 'not quite a SMaSH' tomorrow
