in fairness I may not have sufficiently aerated it to start.. I racked it from a good height and there was a mass of foam on the top when finished so hopefully that should do it... it hasn't stopped fermenting - still blurping well.
yes I used the yeast and nutrient that came with it.. I was thinking I'll not bother using the rest of the yeast and nutrient but go with ec-1118 next time.
The smell has subsided to a great degree after racking back and forth twice and adding about 5 tsp of youngs nutrient.

24 hours into fermentation and it has stunk out my whole garage.
I read that adding more nutrient and racking n.a. k and firth a few time can help.. so that's what I have done.

yes I also got that. not sure I'm too bothered about the colour but I guess people's perception of a solid red is a deep colour so I may add it for effect
ok it's begun.. 2.5kg blackberries, boiled them for a few minutes with 3kg sugar and some water to kill bugs
put in an FV onto 2 campden tabs and 5 tsp of pectolase and 450gm of grape powder.
going to leave 24 hours then top up to 5 gallon and take SG to 1.1 (brix 24 is 1.1) by adding sugar...

I know, mine arrived today and I getting a bit giddy already. I'm going "all in" and doing about 21.5 litre with 500gm of powder and 4kg sugar. 21.5l as I want 20litre of finished product for 4 x 5l bag in box
I have a wand and there is no way it is degassed after 60 seconds. When i put into 5l water bottles after degassing in the 23l carboy it still takes a good 5 or 6 shakes to get the gas out.

yeh, I have only done 1.. going out at the weekend to pick some more. I may fortify with some red grape powder I am getting and then chuck in some neutral spirit when its fermented out half way and have a go at a port also.
got to be worth a go at that price... I was just about to order a red kit as well. Worst case the first 23l isn't great, can always add the powder to kits for some oomph.
I am off out at the weekend to get another glut! also looking on the usual sites for demijohns. Clanged two together last week and one of the "exploded" the glass was everywhere. STay safe people.

forgot to say I it 3 bunches of elderberries in also..
