@Chippy_Tea Yep, now I can see the thumbnail. Thanks

    Honing water profile

Your hardness or alkalinity is the water's resistance to pH change. The higher it is, the more acid is required to affect a change in pH which is what the grains would normally do during the mash. Adding additional acid will reduce the calcium carbonate by percipitating it out of solution...

    Mashtun drainage/filter vs efficiency

True, you can account for efficiency in your recipes. In my case though it's about curiosity to see if a different draininage solution will make a difference. My current setup also doesn't allow me to stir properly during mash in. If I stir it too far down, it tends to lift the false bottom...

Beginners Guide to Water Treatment (plus links to more advanced water treatment in post #1)

True, but in the form of calium phosphate which should not affect Calcium ion concentration in your water. Check your water calculator for this. Adding phosphoric doesn't show an increase in Ca2+ on my calculator. CRS will in turn increase suplhate and chloride in your water, which are shown in...

Beginners Guide to Water Treatment (plus links to more advanced water treatment in post #1)

Sorry to interject, but I use phosphoric acid myself. I tend to mix my mash 50/50 with ashbeck water as my tap water is over 300ppm calcium carbonate. I have added up to 5-7ml of phosphoric (75%) to 18l of water without any noticeable effects from the acid.

    Mashtun drainage/filter vs efficiency

I saw some on ebay for 8quid a meter. At screwfix you can get a braided hose for 3quid a meter, but as @ACBEV said, you have to dismantle it. I'm going to go for the screwfix one, as I can also pickup the rest of the bits I need there. I'll post about the build on my blog when it's done. :)

    Mashtun drainage/filter vs efficiency

Thanks for the replies. I've started doing a double sparge by splitting the sparge water into two and letting each sit for 15minutes before lautering. With my current setup I managed to get 73% which was a big increase from around 60% before. Seeing as the braided hose is going to run much...

    Mashtun drainage/filter vs efficiency

I have a square Igloo cooler with a round false bottom (kinda like this one https://www.brewuk.co.uk/delux-insulated-mash-tun.html) and my efficiency isn't great. I was wondering if I were to make a copper "grid" like this https://cdn2.brewersfriend.com/copper1.jpg can I expect a better...

    Mash tun conversion

Mine doesn't cover the whole bottom either, it just sits on the bottom like this one http://www.home-brew-online.com/equipment-c40/brupaks-mash-tun-deluxe-44-litre-with-stainless-steel-ball-valve-and-false-bottom-p2195

    Mash tun conversion

I have a false bottom attached with a piece of hose. So there's a hose barb on both sides of the valve. It works fine, but I've also used it without a filter at all without any issues.

    Mash tun conversion

Now my head is spinning. No more imperial for me :) Anyways, the hole in my tun is drilled to fit the valve, so you could try drilling it if it's too small?

    Mash tun conversion

I bought mine converted already. But basically it looks like they just drilled a hole into the cool box and fitted the valve into that. However you say the hole is 1 inch, but the fittings are 3/4. So the hole is too big, not too small? Or is there a typo somewhere?

    Ph tester

I use this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01C5OOF6I/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 or strips, depending on if I am in the mood to clean the thing later

    Hefeweizen mash

I did a Hefeweizen a couple of brews back and was in the same boat: decoct or not decoct. Already mentioned here are reasons to decoct. @Bigcol49 is right that is about raising temp, but there also side effects of boiling a portion of the wort that affect the end result. Not sure how true this...

How long do you condition for?

Depends on the type of beer, bit a minimum is a about two weeks bottle conditioning. Of course some beers do taste erster a few weeks later but some don't (wheats) I like drinking beers over time to see how the flavour profile changes to give me an idea of when I can expect different styles to...

    Show us your beer.

Here is iteration two of Away In A Mango. A Simcoe hopped juicy IPA. Cleared nicely and tastes great. Total hops 300g for 20liters 2017 Simcoe harvest pellets.

    Swing top bottles

I use Franziskaner bottles and some Hacker bottles. My parents brought me some beer from Germany and I noticed that the bottles used for local sales tend to be much thicker than those I bought. Transport cost savings :) Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using Tapatalk
