    James Morton - Brew

The Kolsch was my first brew from the book. It was ok. But I have improved a fair bit (I hope) since that brew. I have since tried an actual real Kolsch and to be honest it wasn't much better. I forgot to mention the Mosquito Amber Ale. It was another cracker. It's a good book and improved...

    James Morton - Brew

I love the book. I've made about a dozen of the recipes from it. The Totally Tropical is amazing. One of my best. The American Session Wheat Beer and the Oatmeal Extra Pale Ale were also great. I'm currently conditioning the Irish Export Stout and the Undead Pale Ale, fermenting the US Store...

    Yucky plastic aftertaste :(

Perhaps you could send a bottle to someone on the forum experienced enough to identify off flavours and their causes. What's a plastic taste to you might taste different to someone else and may help find the solution. My initial thought is also the home brew kit twang.

    What are you drinking tonight.

Sipping a Thornbridge Fourpure collaboration Strawberry Milkshake IPA called Fresa. Bought it out of curiousity but it's actually very good.

    keg troubleshooting help.

I'll give that a try. I also tightened everything this morning with a spanner. There wasn't much play but worth a try. Incidentally Foxbat, I am attempting your house bitter in a few brews time. I have the grain, but the yeast was out of stock. Looking forward to it.

    keg troubleshooting help.

Hi, it's just a 5ltr keg with the tap fitted directly on to a disconnect. I haven't had a chance to check the dip tube but I'm hoping that's the issue. I've checked for leaks using soapy water, and my mini CO2 cartridges aren't running out, so I am ruling out a leak.

    What are you drinking tonight.

Tonight I'm enjoying a NEIPA from Vocation Brewery call Love & Hate (bought in Tesco). It's damn good.

Have a go at simple AG

Yep. Just use regular breakfast porridge oats.

    keg troubleshooting help.

Cheers Dutto. I'll check the dip tube tomorrow. It is making a gurgling sound when pouring so a block would seem plausible. What do you mean by attenuator? I don't think I have one of those .

    keg troubleshooting help.

I'm looking for some keg troubleshooting help... I have 2 x 5ltr kegs, with the flow control tap. First time I used it, it worked a treat. This time I have a wheat beer with lots of foam, but no fizz - it's pretty flat. I'm certain I have no leaks. More certain than I was with my first...

Imperial Yeast - forum member reviews.

Cheers Dan. Means my lager yeast is 16 days old as opposed to 4 and a half months lol.

Imperial Yeast - forum member reviews.

Can anyone confirm that the manufacturing date on Imperial yeast uses the US format of MM/DD/YYYY?

    What did you brew today?

I brewed 12ltrs of US Brown ale today, with 120g chinook and 30g centennial hops. Most added at whirlpool stage. Miscalculated my OG and diluted too much. OG is 1.052 instead of 1.059. Hopefully not an issue. Also my first full boil mash. Haven't worked out my efficiency yet, but apart all...

What’s the worst f*ck up you’ve ever done at work?

When rushed to make an estimate of savings from our new waste disposal contract, I calculated (wrongly) £450,000. The department got that money taken off them (as apparently they didn't need it anymore). Turns out they did need it. Oops!! That sinking feeling when you realise something isn't...

    Van "flies" in roundabout crash

Is it just me or does he not even apply the brakes? Even at the last second?

    Soft Water

I'm in Ayrshire and our water is very soft. Our 10 year old kettle looks brand new inside. My stouts are a bit meh, but my pales are decent. Cwrw666 - did you add anything to the ashbeck water or use as is from the bottle?

WLP565 Saison fermentation temps - reassurance needed!

I'm brewing James Morton's Saison soon. He recommends WLP565 and fermenting as high as 30-32°!!. He also states not to let the temperature drop once you start increasing it, as it risks the yeast stalling. WLP565 is known to stop fermenting and restarting again as much as 2 weeks later. JM...

I would be annoyed too. They should have advised him that the yeast he requested was not available. Being free doesn't change that.

    Mojo: MIA

I had a similar problem about 2 years ago. Seriously contemplated giving up. I embarked on a back to basics series of brews. Wheat and IPA have always been kind to me and I used recipes which I knew worked. I stuck to my notes as opposed to winging it on the day. I planned the brew day as...

First all grain brew - help with recipe

I think it means 14 litres for the mash. From this you will get around 10 litres of wort (due to grain absorption). Then sparge with 16 litres to get a total of 26 litres for the boil. Your figures on the day will likely vary due to various things such as equipment, technique, how fine the...
