    Problem syphoning my brew

Be careful when using an auto-siphon, the initial pumping brings some air in to the mix. I siphon the first 200ml or so in to a jug which sits in the FV. Then when it runs clear (no bubbles), I move the tube so that the wort runs straight in to the FV. If at any time I have to re-pump the...

Double check that your bottles are clean!

I second this. I had some bottles cleaned and ready for putting away. I had a final cleanliness check and noticed a thin film inside some of the bottles. So I soaked them in oxi, and was surprised at the crud which rose to the top of each bottle. Will maybe make this a regular part of my...

    Show us your beer.

Clint, what does it taste like? I've been intrigued by TC but unsure of what it's like

That looks a real good pint. Good head on it too.

    Show us your beer.

Lol it won't last that long I can assure you. Tbh I'm not bothered anymore about clear beer (although I knew this one would be hazy). I recently gave a fairly murky IPA to my mate and his wife and they both loved it.

Does anyone brew in this heat

Thats just what i was thinking. On saturday once the IC has got it down to about 30, i may just rack into FV and let the brew fridge do the rest. Then pitch a Couple of hours later. Is there any drawbacks to this method? The alternative was liquor back with about 4 litres of super chilled...

Does anyone brew in this heat

Ok. I've been shamed in to it. The brew is on. I'd be annoyed if I postponed it anyway. Cheers for the motivation

Does anyone brew in this heat

I have a brew planned for Sunday, but the current hot weather (27°c for Sunday), is putting me off. I imagine it would be unbearable. Do other folk still brew in this weather?

10 days in the bottle, Oatmeal Extra Pale Ale (from James Morton's book), using Vermont ale yeast. Very happy with this. Solely Amarillo and Citra hops. Good combo and nice haze from the oats.

    Plate chillers

Cheers guys. I think I'll steer clear of plate chillers! Might try building my own immersion one though.

Do you brew alone or in company

Alone. No one (except me) gets in the kitchen on brew day. Just me and my tunes. I also do the cooking, but feck that after 6hrs brewing, so always finish brew days with a take away.

    Plate chillers

I think I need to replace my immersion chiller, and plate chillers have always interested me. What are people's experiences with them? Do you still have control over how much hop debris and trub makes it's way into the FV? And I've read that you can use gravity, rather than a pump? Is this...

Have a go at simple AG

I never get the full volume in the fermenter based on the batch size in the recipe. I always think the batch size must be based on zero loss in the kettle from trub and dead space, but I usually have around 2ltrs of trub left in the kettle.

    Passivation of SS fermenter

TSP without a doubt. Really does cut through grease. I also find starsan leaves SS very shiny

As long as you're happy that your water is sanitary, I'd add to final cooling stage, or FV.

In fact, I believe you could intentionally make the abv higher (more grain, same amount of water) for this very purpose.

Have a go at simple AG

Absolutely you can do that. Liquoring back it's called. I use un-opened bottled spring water from the fridge, which also helps cool the wort a little, if you wait till you under 25°C or so. You'll find a dilution calculator in Beer Smith or Brewers Friend

    OG and FG questions

If you calculate your expected pre-boil gravity here (75% efficiency is a reasonable estimate) https://www.brewersfriend.com/brewhouse-efficiency/ And compare it to your actual pre-boil gravity on brew day, you can add DME to top up the gravity. I'm sure dextrose would also be fine. I've had...

Have a go at simple AG

My first AG brew was clibit's recipe at the start of this thread. You can easily scale it up and also change the hops easily enough. It's a great place to start. Other advice I'd give you for your first AG, is have a plan. Write down step by step what you think you'll need to do, and update...

Have a go at simple AG

Each to their own, but when starting out in AG, I'd recommend using a tried and tested recipe. That way, any issues your brew has you know will not be down to the recipe. It is an exciting but steep learning curve, and the less variables you introduce at this stage, will let you dial in the...
