Homebrew Competition February - Dark Beers

Thanks for the feedback @Zephyr259 ! 4th AG and a decent enough score from a proper beer drinker! Im glad you survived it!

    Horners Brew Day

You can put the muslin on either end. It's best to boil it beforehand to sanitise. I usually just soak in starsan and it's been ok so far. I did have trouble letting air in to the syphon on my first attempt. I put it down to the nylon bag being on the suction side of the syphon. It may well...

Pale ale cloudy four days after bottling

I would like to think so! We live in a very messed up, backward society though. 4 days? Gotta give it longer than that!

    Horners Brew Day

Do you cold crash? If so it'll definitely be fine. If not it will still be fine. Do you rack to a bottling bucket? After an AG brew I'll end up with some trub and hop debris settled in the FV. It compacts down and after racking to a bottling bucket, using a muslin/nylon straining bag, I get...

    Batch sparge advice

I only one brew done last month which was my second attempt at batch sparging. They were around 6 weeks apart which wasn't ideal. I've got two weeks off tomorrow and plan to do two brewdays back to back in that time. Depending on other plans I might try and squeeze in a third. I'm hoping that 2...

    Batch sparge advice

Did you end up with 25L in your fv? How did you calculate your effeciency? Did you account for the extra 3 litres when calculating effeciency? My second attempt at batch sparging left about 5 litres over. I aimed for 25 and finished off at 28 but there was about four left boiler so I could have...

    Giveaway Inkbird temperature controller!

I'll put my name in the hat. Any inkbird device would be lovely

    Hydro temp limit?

I usually collect a little bit of wort in a jug and leave it aside for a couple of minutes. Through the winter it cools fairly quickly but I've put it in the trial jar fairly hot (50'sC) and had no issues. I'm not too bothered about accurate sg's during the sparge. I don't temperature correct...

    Love it!

A chocolate oatmeal stout which is in the current competition! Was brilliant the first few weeks but carbonation seems to have died off which is a current theme for my brews at the minute.

    Safale s-04

I am going to give some liquid yeasts a go. To be honest I'm hoping to not notice a difference to save on money and effort haha. But if I do then I will continue use them. I am actually enjoying making the starters and harvesting.

Another California common attempt side by side with an Anchor steam beer.

    Sexism taken too far?

This was in reply to "who are all these Marxists?" I was saying it seems that anybody with a will to make society more fair and equal is quickly bashed down as a leftist commy Marxist snowflake.

    Safale s-04

I've been getting in to making starters and harvesting recently. This is as a trial run and practice for getting in to using liquid yeasts because "they're better". Having used only Google for my research, all the info I can turn up is basically that today's dry yeasts are as good as any liquid...

    Sexism taken too far?

I think it's anybody with so much of a hint of wanting a fairer more equal society. Or anybody without the "I'm alright jack" attitude.

    Sexism taken too far?

The better together crowd and the brexit crowd are one and the same. No to independence for one group and yes to independence for another.

    Batch sparge advice

I've done 2 batch sparges now. First one was 80% effeciency and second was 78%. That was after a few fly sparge runs at 50-65% roughly. I do it in three stages. Strike water first obviously and say that leaves 26l remaining, I'll split that in two and do two more batches of 13l each. I have...

So i did! Maybe getting a bit obsessed with it haha

    Low Carbonation

I know for the next few batches I'm going to go with the calculator for the style and increase it by 10%-20%. So if it tells me 100g I'm going to go with 115ish roughly. I'm not sure if It's just that I like it fizzier than what brewers friend is recommending, but i am getting pretty flat beer...

Homebrew Competition February - Dark Beers

I'm not bothered personally. Can't see me getting too far up the rankings haha. I meant to ask @Zephyr259, could you let me know what your thoughts are regarding carbonation please. This is an issue I'm having throughout most of my beers of late and would appreciate if someone else also thinks...
