    Does this look like sabotage?

From the picture, it does appear to have failed along what looks like a potential weak spot. Is it quite old?

    Mashtun drainage/filter vs efficiency

I like the braid personally. Prior to that I used a bazooka type and it kept sticking. The braid doesn't stick. Thoughts for improvement when I get the time and inclination; Replace the 50cm braid with 1m. Weight this at intervals with some tube as it tends to float. Get the sewing machine...

Has Social Media had its day?

Wimmin are terrible for gawkin at phones when out. I always have my phone on me but don't tend to look at it all. SWMBO gets very frustrated when I haven't replied to her "are you having a nice time" " is such and such there" "are you getting some food" "why aren't you replying" texts. I have...

Head at last, but at a cost...

I use a 5ml Calpol syringe, works a treat although I don't use it on much other than stout. I can see where @Leon103 is coming from with not needing ahead. Most of my beers have been poor for head and retention and they still taste good. There is a lot of satisfaction to be got from pouring...

    Mash tun conversion

I put a bin bag in an old bucket beside the mash tun, scoop in to that and that's it. I'm doing 6kgish grain bills so not too bad.

    Mash tun conversion

Picking it up to dump the grain? I scoop it with a 1.5 litres jug, it's quick and handy enough. I am keeping my eye out for a better shaped scoop though, something like a dog feed scoop I think.

    Mash tun conversion

I was planning on BIAB if the braid was a failure but itworks good. I bought a metre and split it in two, I shouldn't have bothered, I'll probably get another metre and use the lot.

    Mash tun conversion

I have a plain bog standard cheapy cool box. I cut it with a hole saw to fit a 15mm tank connector and then compression fitting valve on a stub piece to the connector. Never had an issue. Tried a few different things and then got some braid and ripped the tube out, it works a treat!

Coopers Bottles? Good or Bad please help

I've recently been drinking my third batch to get bottled in a mixture of glass bottles and coopers 740's. I can say that there is no difference in the beer from each type of bottle. Not that I noticed anyway. Carbonation wasn't different across the two types either, which was something I was...

Coopers Canadian Blonde dry hop advice

A hop tea is another option. Put some hops in a cafetiere, 30-50grams probably. Boi the kettle and fill the cafitiere once the kettle has cooled to about 80CIsh. Leave for 30-60 minutes and add to the bottling bucket. Thats how i do it anyway. I prefer this to dry hopping personally. Never split...

Reducing SG, what amount of water?

After 7 or 8 AG's in still trying to pin down an exact total in/total put formula. I'm getting close. For me it's been a matter of 1)ditching batch sparging cos it just doesn't work for me. 2) moving to batch sparging and keeping precise volume notes and fine tuning from there each time.

does anyone use mini kegs for TC?

I have. It was a recycled beer keg and there was plenty of carbonation. I didn't use a party star with co2 for it though. I reused the vent cap/bung/valve and just poured from the tap as you would with a new one from the shop. It is a good idea to relieve some pressure through the tap to a...

Bottles; where do you get them?

I leave the labels unless they are getting really scruffy or peel off very easily. Wire wool is good for scrubbing the labels off. Don't do all your bottles in one go though! I'll scrub two or three while I'm drinking or the next day.

Beer styles you’ve struggled to brew successfully

If a beer isn't as good as what I was hoping (and that's usually due to lack of patience for conditioning) I tend to take comfort from the fact that quite a few of the "craft" beers I drink in pubs and buy from shops are substandard. Quite often I am eager to get shop bought bottles drunk so I...

    Grassy flavour

I made a golden ale using only citra about 3 months ago. After about 4-6 weeks conditioning I cracked one and it tasted grassy and a bit dank. It became delicious at the 8-10 week stage. So I suppose what I'm saying is that should condition out. How long has it been bottled?

    Beer bottle capper?

I ordered a bench capper a few months back at 40 quid. They emailed back and said they hadn't got that in stock and would I be happy with the one at 20. I took it and it arrived and it looks exactly the same as the 40quid one and works fine. I got it from thehomebrewcompany.com and I don't even...
