    Taste my beer?

I think I might have found what went wrong. I grabbed the starsan spray bottle yesterday to clean something and noticed some black bits floating inside and seemingly growing on the wall of the bottle around the top edge of the liquid. Looks like black mold! I used that bottle to sanitise all...

    Simon's Brewing Method

Hazelwood Brewery Wow thanks, lots of good things to think about there! My next brew session will be quite fun! Is it possible to treat our hard water to make it softer, or is that (as I assume) only possible by filtering?

    Taste my beer?

Well, I bottles as well as kegged some of the DDH cashemere kevik. Both went darker and taste less clean and fruity. It must be before transfer from FV. I always thought oxygen doesn't matter at the start of fermentation as yeast needs oxygen to multiply, so I have not purged my FV. Maybe I...

    Simon's Brewing Method

Alan; The tap water has chlorine and also chloramines (chlorine derivatives) but very low levels. Compared to other EU counties the level is basically zero AFAIK. The tap water here is drinkable by all people without any issues. TOTAL CHLORINE: 0.67102 mg/l as Cl2 Richard; That's where I...

    Taste my beer?

I can only assume this happened because I accidentally put the dry hops for a different beer in the cashmere one (and vice-versa) then realised my mistake and pulled them out and swapped over. I guess the simple act of having the fermenter open for a few minutes longer or air trapped in the hop...

    Simon's Brewing Method

This is a detailed description of my brewing method and I would appreciate any tip on what I might be able to improve! Mash grain in nylon bag. Electric kettle with digital temp controller, plate on the bottom to keep bag off the heater. Usually 60 mins at ~65C. Water from the tap, no...

    Taste my beer?

It's not terrible, just not as nice as it was last time. I'm going to drink it as quick as I can. Is there a more scientific way to test for oxidation? I do use closed transfer etc so not sure what happened. I'm wiring up my brew method now and will post for advice.

    Taste my beer?

Thank you! Please message me your addresses and I'll send a couple bottles. I'm actually REALLY sad today! I had brewed the IHL mentioned above but also a second batch of Cashmere DDH, the lovely kveik one I was so happy with last time. This time it's not right!!! You guys think this is...

    Wort Chiller Copper vs. Stainless

I already have so many temp controllers and tubes I don't want to add a pump and more tubes to clean with a counterflow chiller. Thanks for the links on caring for copper, I'll give those a read.

    Wort Chiller Copper vs. Stainless

I have a DIY copper immersion wort chiller. I don't like the fact that it comes out of the wort looking cleaner (slightly pink) than it went in. Anybody convince me why it's okay and I shouldn't waste money on a stainless one?

    Kveik yeast and cold crashing

How does kveik handle cold temps? Some yeast will struggle to come back after a cold crash at sat 3c for a day or two.

    Taste my beer?

Hi All, I've been brewing for a couple years now and made some rather nice stout, lager and recently a fruity kveik (neipa I guess). HOWEVER I always have this taste in my IPA (aiming at punk IPA, neck oil, etc) and I don't know what causes it or even how to describe it accurately. It's not bad...

    Gas and fizziness?

Thanks for the replies! I think I answered my own question. It was just taking a lot longer to naturally absorb the CO2 than I expected. Over about 1 week with the keg sitting in the fridge at 30PSI and disconnected from the gas bottle, I barely saw 2PSI of pressure drop. I gassed it back up...

    Gas and fizziness?

Hi everyone, I used to use a pure CO2 gas bottle with my corny kegs, but I now have a 'beer gas' bottle which is 60% CO2 and 40% Nitrogen. I'm just not getting the fizz, despite having the keg at 3.5C and pressure at 30PSI which this chart says should give me 2.6 volumes CO2...

Where did I buy my grain bag?!

Thanks! Any chance you can dig up the item description from an email or orders history? EDIT: Oh I found it just by looking for klarstein! Thanks very much!

Where did I buy my grain bag?!

I want to buy another grain bag but I can't find where I got it :confused.: It has a steel ring around the top that keeps it open while hanging and makes it easy to sparge. Can anyone help me find where to buy another?? I did buy it after a recommendation from a user here. Thanks! Simon

    You sexy thing!

You probably know this already, but I've read that cocoa nibs are best added during sparging to get the smooth taste without a burnt note.

Using lots of Oats and Wheat?

Thanks I'll probably try that! I was wary of using all the wheat but adding a bit of all the others will probably help tame it. I'll soon be kegging a lager made with MJ Bohemian Lager yeast. I could possibly use the trub from that beer to inoculate this one if it's a better choice? It's highly...

Using lots of Oats and Wheat?

I would like to brew tomorrow but I have only got 1.6Kg of pilsner base malt :( I do have about 1Kg each of: Carapils Caramalt Crystal Light Flaked Malted Oats Malted Wheat WWYD (what would you do) to make up about a 3Kg grain bill? I have lots of hops: Cashmere, Cascade, Nelson, Amarillo...
