    Plunging into All Grain

It might be, and in fact I might still be able to make an immersion chiller and use some of the spare copper tubing to make a small immersion chiller, as I will be doing some small SMaSH brews of about 10-12L in a small 3 gallon fermenter. I'll see - I still have a few weeks to sort it out :D

    The Learning Curve

I have just been reading some of the earliest posts I made in January this year regarding building AG breweries and was amazed at how little I knew and how naive some of my ideas were. In just 11 months, I have learned SO much and it is all down to all of you. So thank you for all your help...

    Plunging into All Grain

Counterflow is more compliacated, but now I have seen one in action, and being built, they aren't actually that hard to make. As I have already got all the bits and tubing for my immersion chiller, I am going to stick with that. There is a great "how to" posted on the forum by Big Yin on...

    Plunging into All Grain

I have no practical experience with steel, angle grinders or Q-max cutters so kind of fear the false bottom and deck drain method. I was just going to have braided SS hose and a tee-piece to filter! However, if I can find someone who knows what they're doing to help me, then maybe I should go...

    Flow meters

These aren't partiularly accurate - only to 1/10th gallon, which is just under half-a-litre. In the scheme of things, that's not great for a brew. The others are accurate to 100ml.

    Plunging into All Grain

The ebay site that was linked is excellent, and where I will get my pots. I am getting two 70L cocottes for HLT and Boiler, and a 50L Thermos for the Mash Tun. These will let me produce a pretty decent quantity of beer, and in the future, if I really need to go bigger, then I will thoroughly...

    Plunging into All Grain

SS is the 'top notch', will last forever, but it is more expensive. I am just about to build (after xmas) and have, after a lot of research and deliberation, going SS for all my pots. BUT - it is not essential. A number of coolboxes make excellent mash tuns, for example. BUT - for not much...

HOP FILTER FROM STEEL MESH TUBING

Is the Screwfix SS sheath (once plastic tube removed), strong enough and stable enough to just make a loop out of and attach each end to a copper tee? Could a 22mm tee and ball valve be used to get everything out of the boiler or does the SS tubing restrict the flow to the point where 22mm is...

    eggy smell in my wow

There we go - a wine expert has given very sound advice. Thanks, Moley. And I will stick to what I know best, which is beer :D

HOP FILTER FROM STEEL MESH TUBING

Why does it say that it's not suitable for drinking water in the product description? Is it because of the grade of plastic used?

    !st Lager and stout

The Irish Velvet stout is great. I have posted on it before, but if you use a tin of black treacle and some darker spraymalt, it can come out really 'full' - one for the winter evenings! Good luck with it all - sounds like you have a nice production line going.

    eggy smell in my wow

Hmmm. That doesn't sound good! It sounds like a bacterial infection. I have also had beer smell like this after leaving it on yeast in the fermenter for WAY too long. Autolysis, the process by which yeast kill themselves after a while, produces the most disgusting smell. It could...

    Flow meters

What's the beer like out there? I have heard things about locals brewing with kerosene and all sorts!

    bottle priming / carbonation???

You do not need to put new yeast in, as there is enough in active suspension to finish the job. New yeast will want to divide first in the presence of oxygen and will not have any in the bottle, therefore failing to starting. The amount of sugar should be 1/2tsp per 500ml bottle (roughly). I...

    Flow meters

I would have thought that if they measure down to 0.1L, then they should be accurate to a measurement at least half that per Litre. A review and full test would be really handy. I must admit, if I am going to shell out for it then I would expect it to be pretty damn accurate really. Fingers...

    Flow meters

Could that be down to the liquid fat, as they are designed for a much less viscous liquid?

    Flow meters

Most of these meters don't reset, you just need a notepad and pencil to work out the new figure you are aiming for each time.

    Flow meters

Yeah, I was considering a combo sight glass and thermometer kit for my HLT, but I think I will just go for a built-in thermometer and use a hot water flow meter instead. It will be a lot more accurate! And let's face it, they are very cool!! Man toys! Hooray!

    Flow meters

These look quite good, but they are only rated to 40C. I am wondering if there would be an issue, with regard to 'food safe' in having water closer to 70C passing through it.

Did not add yeast until this morning

That's what we like to hear!
