    Platinum-treated silicone hose and whirlpooling

Good evening! I am trying to plan ahead for a test and simulation run of my updated kit and am wondering about whirlpooling. If I have this right, I will be recirculating from the boiler through my counter flow chiller and back into the boiler for 5 minutes to sanitise, but once we are in the...

Brew Fridge - suitable for use?

Great. I have some plywood to make a shelf for the FV. Once I have drilled holes in it, do I still need to insulate the bottom of the FV with something to stop the yeast getting too hot? I have a bit of leftover Cellotex I can use.

Brew Fridge - suitable for use?

Thank you so much everyone! So…the only choice now is the 45W or 60W tube. Is the more powerful one too much for a fridge rhat size?

Brew Fridge - suitable for use?

Hi all, I have bee given a fridge to use as a brew fridge - standard 85cm high under the counter job and I can fit a 30L fermenter in it, which is good news. What I am wondering is, however, is if I will have trouble as the pump/compressor comes in half way into where the salad crisper draw...

Modern mild - am I really the only brewer who makes it?

Planning a dark mild for a recipe to brew in 2023. Agree Mild is under brewed and under-rated. Also like even rarer ‘light mild’. Will keep you posted on brews day when it comes 👍🏻

    Dry hopping equipment

Hi all! I have been looking for something to use for dry hopping and wondered if this would be good in the FV...

    Blackberries, sanity check

With frozen fruit, could you make a ‘lumpy’ (not too mashed) compote with half a Campden tablet thrown in to sanitise and kill any wild yeast. Sounds like it should work, but never tried it.

    Sanitiser recomendation

Ah! I have only just started using Corny kegs, so what I did with my first use was dilute to 1:200 (minimum recommended) and then flush with water twice until I couldn’t smell it. Maybe I should have something else for the kegs!!

    Sanitiser recomendation

I use Peracetic acid, used on dairy farms, which is great, but you need to be careful as it can give you a chemical burn until it touches water to dilute it. The acetic acid is then non-rinse as it is absorbed by the yeast as part of the metabolic pathway of fermenting sugar anyway.

    Temperature Controllers for Brew Fridge

Long time since I started this thread and now need a new temp controller on my return to brewing. Does anyone still make an STC-1000 ready wired with two sockets like Cedartronica used to? I can’t find any online.

Making GF Beer - Clarity Ferm

Happy Advent! Right, my wife is a coeliac and loves gf beer. I started looking at malts and extracts and it all seemed very limited. However! White Labs Clarity Ferm, apart from de-hazing beer, also apparently removes gluten to at or below 20ppm, the level at which beer could be certified...

Storing grains in old Corny Keg

It would already be crushed - if there is no need to worry too much about this, then our local ‘everything’ shop has large food boxes for a few quid that have a silicone seal, maybe airtight, but definitely stackable on top of a cupboard in a relatively cool room.

Storing grains in old Corny Keg

I am thinking about how I am going to store my malt, especially smaller packs that I am using a bit of each time. To help, I am trying to plan my first recipes so that I can use the malts up completely within 3 or 4 brews, so no more than 3-4 months. I have some airtight storage containers and...

    Containers for Yeast Starter

Thanks for all the advice and ideas. I will definitely look into these and experiment a little. I’ll let you know how I get on.

    Containers for Yeast Starter

Sounds good and definitely cheaper than flasks! Do you just use a rubber bung and airlock, or have you adapted the screw top?

    Containers for Yeast Starter

I have only ever made a couple of starters, but my brew app suggests I should be doing this a lot more - a couple of recipes are already demanding 1 - 2L starters. I have a 1L conical flask, but wondered if a small 1 gallon plastic fermenter can be used effectively for this. It’s harder to...

AG#1 - Bill Clay Bitter (BJCP Style 11B)

Planning a Best Bitter for my next brew, first of two Die Hard inspired beers (if you know the film, you’ll understand the name!) Going for something relatively simple, as first brew in about 9 years! Restarting my brew count at 1: 91% Maris Otter 7% Medium Crystal 2% Wheat Malt 45g Bramling...

    Set for Christmas?

I’m just getting back into the AG brewing game after a long break, but on track to finish my MT Coolbox conversion in the next 2 weeks. I won’t have any beer ready quite for xmas, but *hope* to have a corny and a dozen bottles of a Best Bitter ready for New Year and a Cali Common fermenting by...

    Problem pressurising Corny kegs

All sorted, thank you for your help! Swapped the fittings and have successfully pressurised and dispensed sanitizer, rinsing water and now kegged with Turbo Cider - sorry to use the ‘c’ word, but can’t brew beer until I convert my Coolbox for my MT! 😂 That’s in a different post - I’ll let you...

    Problem pressurising Corny kegs

Ah…..that might not be helping! I’ll swap my grey and black over and see if that helps! Sorry for newbie ignorance with this, but what are the check valves? ☺️
